To determine the distribution of rotavirus strain genotypes in South Korea, rotavirus-positive stool specimens were collected from July 2002 through June 2003 at 8 hospitals Korean Rotavirus Strain Surveillance Network, and they genotyped by means reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction. The globally uncommon G4P[6] type was most prevalent identified among strains (27% strains), newly emerging G9P[8] accounted for 11% strains, common (i.e., G1P[8], G2P[4], G3P[8], G4P[8]) constituted...
Among 365 Escherichia coli isolated in 2003, 31 cefotaxime-resistant isolates were obtained from clinical specimens taken adults hospitalized Busan, Korea. Six extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing investigated further to determine the mechanism of resistance. These analysed by antibiotic susceptibility testing, pI determination, plasmid profiles, transconjugation test, PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), enterobacterial repetitive consensus (ERIC)-PCR and DNA...
The 5th year KONSAR surveillance in 2001 was based on routine test data at 30 participating hospitals. It of particular interest to find a trend the resistances enterococci vancomycin, Enterobacteriaceae 3rd generation cephalosporin and fluoroquinolone, Pseudomonas aeruginosa acinetobacters carbapenem. Resistance rates Gram-positive cocci were: 70% Staphylococcus aureus oxacillin; 88% 16% Enterococcus faecium ampicillin respectively. Seventy-two percent pneumococci were nonsusceptible...
The antimicrobial activity of ursolic (UA) and (OA), both triterpenoid compounds,...
The four methods for assigning bacterial species are the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI), modified CLSI (mCLSI), phylogenetic analysis (PA) closest match (CM) methods, these used to identify genus using 16S rRNA gene sequence results. In this study, results of identification by 37 aerobic reference strains, 30 anaerobic 15 Acinetobacter strains 167 clinical were compared. rates accurate level CLSI, mCLSI, PA CM as follows: 24.3, 86.5, 86.5 89.2%, respectively, strains;...
The hairy snails of the genus Alviniconcha are representative deep-sea hydrothermal vent animals distributed across Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. Out six known species in , only one nominal A. marisindica was found Ocean from Carlsberg Ridge (CR), Central (CIR) to northern part Southwest (SWIR) Southeast (SEIR). Recently, were at three new fields, named Onnare, Onbada, Onnuri, CIR, which promotes a more comprehensive phylogeographic study this species. Here, we examined phylogeography...

Between November 2002 and March 2003, an outbreak of candiduria occurred in the surgical intensive care unit (SICU) a university-affiliated hospital South Korea. This affected 34 patients was caused by Candida tropicalis. To determine source epidemic risk factors, surveillance cultures from SICU, genotyping isolates pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), case-control study were performed. The revealed that 6 environmental samples related to urine disposal route positive for C. PFGE...
Adjuvant use of geraniol, a plant essential oil component, is known to increase the efficacy antibiotics by acting as potent inhibitor efflux mechanisms. In this study, we assessed effect geraniol–antibiotic combination in 21 Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates consisting high (HE) and low (LE) activity groups. We determined MIC for geraniol four evaluated adjuvant antimicrobial resensitization geraniol. Geraniol–antibiotic combinations significantly reduced all ( P < 0.0001), fold...
Abstract Background Understanding the contribution of efflux pumps to resistance antibiotics is useful when considering strategies for antimicrobial therapy. Objectives To assess role activity on commonly used in hospitals. Methods We analyzed 120 clinical isolates Acinetobacter baumannii using an Hoechst 33342 (H33342) dye-accumulation assay. compared indicators susceptible and non-susceptible groups each 16 tested antibiotics. determine antibiotic, we 3 criteria based results...
The three components of taxonomy are classification, nomenclature and identification. Traditionally, bacterial classification identification were performed based on the morphology biochemical data bacteria. In newer theories, or so-called natural concepts, relationships between bacteria overall similarities both phenotypic genotypic characteristics. polyphasic taxonomy, current describes integration all available genotypic, phenotypic, phylogenetic information into a consensus type...
The population divergence process of deep-sea vent invertebrates is driven by both biotic (e.g., dispersal during the larval stage) and abiotic factors such as deep-ocean currents, depth, geological setting vents. However, little known regarding hydrothermal microorganisms. Therefore, our study sought to investigate influence geographic on symbiotic bacteria Bathymodiolus mussels. genetic differentiation patterns symbionts were examined using next-generation sequencing DNA data in two ocean...
The mytilid mussel Bathymodiolus thermophilus lives in the deep-sea hydrothermal vent regions due to its relationship with chemosynthetic symbiotic bacteria. It is well established that symbionts reside gill bacteriocytes of and can utilize hydrogen sulfide, methane, from surrounding environment. However, it observed some either possess or lack genes for metabolism within single-ribotype population host species level. Here, we found a hydrogenase cluster consisting additional H2-sensing...
Background The emergence of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as a nosocomial pathogen is one the major public health problems. aim this study was to evaluate role an efflux pump gene adeJ for multidrug resistance ofA. clinical isolates. Methods Two groups (MDRAB and SAB) A. isolates were studied. SAB group consisted strains that did not meet criteria MDRAB susceptible more categories antibiotics than MDRAB. Antimicrobial susceptibility results obtained by VITEKⅡ system used in...
