Scrub typhus is a mite-borne bacterial infection of humans caused by Orientia tsutsugamushi that causes generalized vasculitis may involve the tissues any organ system. The aim this study was to identify factors associated severe complications from scrub typhus. We conducted prospective, case-control on patients who presented Department Internal Medicine at Chosun University Hospital between September, 2004 and December, 2006. Cases were 89 with controls 119 without complications. There...

Eschar is an important finding for the diagnosis of scrub typhus. The IFA test possible typhus was performed. presence or absence eschar thoroughly examined. Among 176 cases confirmed by IFA, 162 (92.0%) had eschar; 128 patients (79.5%) eschars on front body. Eschars were primarily detected in males within 30 cm below umbilicus (19 patients, 35.8%). Distributions lower extremities and chest above 22.6% (12 patients) 20.8% (11 patients), respectively. A different pattern seen females. most...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), originally restricted to hospitals, has emerged as a significant pathogen in the community. Although MRSA accounts for over 60% of S . tertiary hospitals Korea, little is known about epidemiology community-associated (CA-MRSA). From January July 2005, hospital laboratory-based survey was conducted seven community-based or hospitals. The medical records and Health Insurance Review Agency databases were reviewed isolated from patients without...

Abstract We searched for potential suppressors of tumor metastasis by identifying the genes that are frequently down-regulated in hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) while being negatively correlated with clinical parameters relevant to metastasis, and we report here on identification N-myc downstream regulated gene 2 (NDRG2) as a promising candidate. NDRG2 expression was significantly reduced HCC compared nontumor or normal liver tissues [87.5% (35 40) 62% (62 100) at RNA protein levels,...

Despite the worldwide effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, underlying mechanisms fatal viral pneumonia remain elusive. Here, we show that critical COVID-19 is associated with enhanced eosinophil-mediated inflammation when compared to non-critical cases. In addition, confirm increased T helper (Th)2-biased adaptive immune responses, accompanying overt complement activation, in group. Moreover, antibody responses and activation are pathogenesis as evidenced by formation...

Abstract Objective: To evaluate risk factors and treatment outcomes of bloodstream infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (ESBL-KP). Design: Retrospective case-control study. Stored blood isolates K. were tested for ESBL production NCCLS guidelines, double-disk synergy test, or both. Setting: A 1,500-bed, tertiary-care university hospital referral center. Patients: Sixty case-patients with bacteremia due to ESBL-KP compared 60 matched...

Clonorchis sinensis, the Chinese liver fluke, is causative agent of clonorchiasis as well and biliary diseases. The excretory-secretory products (ESPs) parasites play important roles in host-parasite interactions. In this study, we have investigated proteome ESPs obtained from C. sinensis adult worms. Although full genome database not yet available, successfully identified 62 protein spots using 2-DE-based mass analysis EST sinensis. proteins include detoxification enzymes, such glutathione...

ABSTRACT Orientia tsutsugamushi is the causative agent of scrub typhus. For diagnosis typhus, we investigated performances conventional PCR (C-PCR), nested (N-PCR), and real-time quantitative (Q-PCR) targeting O. -specific 47-kDa gene. To compare detection sensitivities three techniques, used two template systems that plasmid DNA (plasmid sensitivity), including a partial region gene, genomic (genomic sensitivity) from buffy coat sample single patient. The C-PCR, N-PCR, Q-PCR were 5 × 10 4...

A series of aromatic polyimides (PIs) were synthesized via the polymerization 3,3′,4,4′-diphenylsulfonyltetracarboxylic dianhydride with 4,4′-diaminotriphenylamine derivatives containing hydrogen, cyano, methoxy, or dimethylamine substituents. These PIs thermally and dimensionally stable produced high-quality thin films when applied in a conventional spin-coating process. Their structure properties characterized. Nanoscale demonstrated excellent electrical memory performance, high...

Recently, the number of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) who have tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2), via reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, after recovery has increased; this caused a dilemma regarding medical measures and policies. We evaluated dynamics viral load anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in four RT-PCR results recovery. In all patients, highest levels immunoglobulin G (IgG) IgM were reached about month onset...
