Objectives To evaluate the predictive value of muscle strength and physical performance in oldest old for all‐cause mortality; hospitalization; onset disability, defined as a decline activities daily living ( ADL s), independent mass, inflammatory markers, comorbidities. Design A prospective, observational, population‐based follow‐up study. Setting Three well‐circumscribed areas Belgium. Participants Five hundred sixty participants aged 80 older were followed 33.5 months (interquartile range...

Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with various clinical, inflammatory and molecular phenotypes. We studied sputum cytokine mRNA expression patterns in an unselected group of adult asthma patients to characterize the underlying process.Differential cell counts (quantified by real-time PCR) were analysed on from 40 controls 66 asthmatic adults. A 'cytokine-high' profile was defined if levels for that particular exceeded 90th percentile value control population. Radar graphs used visualize...

Background: vitamin D deficiency is a well-known cause of bone loss and fractures but its association, especially among the oldest old, with muscle weakness less obvious. Objective: to investigate relationship between 25-hydroxyvitamin (25-OHD) performance in persons aged 80 years older. Methods: baseline results Belfrail study, prospective, population-based cohort study were used balance, grip strength gait speed relation 25-OHD serum levels 367 subjects. Abstract A large proportion of HIV-coinfected visceral leishmaniasis (VL-HIV) patients exhibit chronic disease with frequent VL recurrence. However, knowledge on immunological determinants underlying the course is scarce. We longitudinally profiled circulatory cellular immunity an Ethiopian HIV cohort that included developers. show VL-HIV high and persistent levels TIGIT PD-1 CD8 + /CD8 - T cells, in addition to a lower frequency IFN-γ suggestive impaired cell functionality. Abstract Leishmaniasis is caused by parasitic protozoa of the genus Leishmania and found widely across tropics sub-tropics, afflicting hundreds thousands people. The disease notoriously difficult to treat. Here, we present evidence existence persister-like cells in cultured populations, induced upon exposure normally lethal doses antimony, a used anti-leishmanial. Persisters are small fraction non-proliferative with reduced metabolism that adapted withstand variety environmental assaults,...

A subset of older people is at increased risk hospitalization and dependency. Emerging evidence suggests that immunosenescence reflected by an inverted CD4:8 ratio cytomegalovirus (CMV) seropositivity plays important role in the pathophysiology functional decline. Nevertheless, relation between outcome has rarely been investigated. Here, T-cell phenotypes 235 community-dwelling persons aged ≥81.5 years BELFRAIL study 25 younger (mean age 28.5 years) were analyzed using polychromatic flow...

Although different chronic arthritic diseases are defined by clinical factors like gender, psoriasis and auto-antibodies, the biology of inflamed joints while comparing remains neglected. Here, after curating an joint derived T-cell receptor (TCR) database, our new TRIASSIC tool identified 66303 significantly convergent TCR clonotypes. Clustering clonotypes showed that synovial fluid convergence clusters (SFCCs) characterized HLA-B27+ mediated (spondyloarthritis, SpA, enthesitis-related...

Previous studies indicated Clade I monkeypox virus infection to be associated with marked elevation of proinflammatory cytokines. This remains unexplored for II-associated disease, which has different clinical manifestations and prognosis. We used a 65-plex cytokine, chemokine, growth factor (CCG) panel analyze serum samples 100 male acute IIb mpox patients 26 healthy controls in Belgium. Objective: previous studies have demonstrated an association between cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection and mortality in adults. In this prospective study, it was investigated whether these findings could be confirmed the oldest old. Methodology: data obtained from a observational cohort study (2008–2012) of 549 community-dwelling persons Belgium aged 80 older. BackgroundWe have conducted a single-arm trial evaluating monthly pentamidine secondary prophylaxis (PSP) to prevent visceral leishmaniasis (VL) relapse in Ethiopian human immunodeficiency virus–infected patients. Outcomes at 12 months of PSP been previously reported, supporting effectiveness and safety. However, remaining relapse-free after discontinuation is vital. We now report outcomes associated factors for period up 2.5 years initiating PSP, including 1-year follow-up discontinuation.
