Rats were given series of escapable shocks, identical inescapable or no shock. The subjects reexposed to a small amount shock 24 hours later, after which an in vitro measure the cellular immune response was examined. Lymphocyte proliferation mitogens phytohemagglutinin and concanavalin A suppressed group but not group. This suggests that controllability stressors is critical modulating functioning.

Summary Objective The aim of this study was to determine whether salivary cortisol measured by a simple enzyme immunoassay (EIA) could be used as surrogate for serum total in response rapid changes and across wide range concentrations. Design Comparisons matched samples dynamic hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis testing. Subjects Healthy women ( n = 10; three taking oral oestrogens) men 2), aged 23–65 years, were recruited from the community. Measurements Paired saliva obtained during...

Adrenal glucocorticoids play an important role in mediating many of the behavioral and physiological effects exposure to stressors. Focus has been primarily on acute stress-induced rise [corticosterone (CORT) rat]. There are reports, however, that chronic stressors can produce increase basal CORT a decrease corticotropin-binding globulin (CBG). These changes occur subsequent CORT. The following experiments examined whether stressor (100 5-sec inescapable tail shocks; IS) could also long term...

In Brief OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships between psychological and physiologic measures of stress, mood, gestational age at delivery preterm birth. METHODS: This prospective cohort study recruited healthy women in early second trimester who were 18–45 years age. Validated perceived depressive symptoms, anxiety completed 16, 22, 28, 34, 40 weeks gestation. Cortisol concentration was measured maternal hair gestation to approximate first-, second-, third-trimester levels stress....

Abstract Reactivation of latent herpes viruses was measured in 23 astronauts (18 male and 5 female) before, during, after long-duration (up to 180 days) spaceflight onboard the international space station . Twenty age-matched sex-matched healthy ground-based subjects were included as a control group. Blood, urine, saliva samples collected spaceflight. Saliva analyzed for Epstein–Barr virus, varicella-zoster simplex virus type 1. Urine cytomegalovirus. One astronaut did not shed any targeted...

The importance of hair cortisol as a long-term retrospective measure systemic exposure is being increasingly recognized, and over recent years, the field analysis has seen rapid expansion with laboratories around globe, integrating into their study designs. These use different methods analysis, presently, no attempt been made to compare them. To move toward clinical utilization this novel method, international benchmark reference values must be established. For that end, 4 leading in testing...

Few things seem more natural and functional than wanting to be happy. We suggest that, counter this intuition, valuing happiness may have some surprising negative consequences. Specifically, because striving for personal gains can damage connections with others is usually defined in terms of positive feelings (a gain) western contexts, might people's make them lonely. In 2 studies, we provide support hypothesis. Study 1 suggests that the people value happiness, lonelier they feel on a daily...

This study investigated the effects of acculturation on cortisol, a biological correlate maternal psychological distress, and perinatal infant outcomes, specifically gestational age at birth weight.Fifty-five pregnant women Mexican descent were recruited from community hospital, their saliva samples collected home for 3 days during pregnancy 15 to 18 weeks (early), 26 32 (mid), more than (late) gestation once in postpartum period (4-12 weeks). These values used determine diurnal cortisol...
