ABSTRACT Climate change, land development, and increased outdoor human activity have the prevalence distribution of tick-borne pathogens, causing public health issues. Asia is a pivotal region emerging infectious diseases caused by zoonotic disease. Therefore, this study aimed to construct effective surveillance systems establish preventive strategies against novel diseases. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed detect pathogens from animal blood-fed ticks. Ticks ( n = 261) were...
Several species of birds in Minami Daito Island, an oceanic island located the far south from main islands Japan, were found to be infected with avian Plasmodium. However, no vector malaria this have been revealed yet. To speculate potential vectors, we collected mosquitoes there and investigated using a PCR procedure whether harbor or not. Totally 1,264 including 9 during March 2006 February 2007. The stored every species, sampled date location for DNA extraction. Fifteen out 399 samples...
Summary The introduction of exotic rats Rattus spp. is one the most important factors contributing to reduction in avian diversity and extinctions on oceanic islands. However, little known about other than predation, which are associated with loss island biodiversity. We report that introduced Ship Rats rattus constructed arboreal dome-shaped nests secondarily used open-cup Bull-headed Shrike Lanius bucephalus for roosting or rearing young trees within hedgerows along sugarcane fields...
This report describes, for the first time, harmful effects of invasive Yellow Crazy Ants Anoplolepis gracilipes on wild birds in Japan. We observed fledglings Bull-headed Shrike Lanius bucephalus and Daito White-eye Zosterops japonicus daitoensis caused fatal injuries by ants ground Minami-daito Island. compared reproductive behaviors Scops Owl Otus elegans interpositus a cavity with cavities without found that while success did not differ between them, parental females more frequently...
Abstract Sex allocation theory predicts that parents bias the offspring sex ratio strategically. In avian species, can be biased at multiple growth stages, although mechanisms are not well known. It is crucial to reveal a cause and timing of ratio. We investigated (i) from laying fledging; (ii) stage which became biased; (iii) in Eurasian tree sparrows Passer montanus . determination 218 offspring, including hatchlings unhatched eggs 41 clutches, suggested was egg‐laying but significantly...
Haemosporidian parasites infection among wild birds inhabiting Minami-daito Island was studied. Blood films from 183 representing 4 species of families were examined microscopically. Avian haemosporidian detected in 3 with an overall prevalence 59.6%. None the 30 Daito scops owls (Otus interpositus) infected. Either Haemoproteus sp. or Plasmodium found 14 31 (45.2%) Borodino islands white-eyes (Zosterops japonicus daitoensis). spp. 94 102 (92.2%) bull-headed shrikes (Lanius bucephalus) and 1...
Appropriate nest‐site selection is one of the most important ways to minimize loss reproductive investment due predation. We determined environmental characteristics associated with nest predation during incubation and nestling periods arboreal nesting Bull‐headed Shrikes on oceanic Minami‐Daito Island where predator community has low species diversity includes only three introduced mammals: Ship Rat Rattus rattus , Japanese Weasel Mustela itatsi Feral Cat Felis catus . Egg declined...
We investigated whether the badge size of Eurasian Tree Sparrow Passer montanus is correlated with morphological traits and hematocrit during breeding season in order to elucidate function as a potential signal body physiological condition. found positive correlation males between hematocrit, but not females. As individuals larger values can transport more oxygen their tissues or organs, male may be linked ability. suggest that status.
Since the 1970s Bull-headed Shrike Lanius bucephalus has established a breeding population on Daito Islands. The islands represent southwestern limit of species' range. We investigated habitat selection this isolated during 2003 season in agricultural landscape Minami-daito Island. A comparison types around shrike nests and randomly selected points, showed that shrikes largely foraged sugarcane fields utilized fences utility wires as suitable perch sites. Our results suggest it is open,...
The seasonal prevalence and spatial distribution of mosquitoes were examined as part an avian malaria study on the oceanic island Minami-Daito Island, Japan. Because dry ice was not available in this study, yeast-generated CO2 used to attract biting mosquitoes. Adult collected biweekly using battery-operated traps enhanced with a gravid trap from March 2006 February 2007. CO2-baited distributed 4 different habitats: sugar cane field, forest vegetation ring, residential area, swamp area. At 3...
Multi-material components (e.g., bimetallic components) are considered better than their monometallic counterparts in terms of sustainability. To get some insights into the machining characteristics a component, turning experiments have been conducted using specimens made aluminum and titanium alloys, mild stainless steels, cast iron. The nonlinearity exhibited by cutting force signals is analyzed from perspective time, frequency, delay domains. How to estimate power represent forces fuzzy...
