Observations of the millimeter sky contain valuable information on a number signals, including blackbody cosmic microwave background (CMB), Galactic emissions, and Compton-y distortion due to thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (tSZ) effect. Extracting new insight into cosmological astrophysical questions often requires combining multiwavelength observations spectrally isolate one component. In this work, we present arc-minute-resolution map, which traces out line-of-sight-integrated electron...
We report on a measurement of the angular spectrum cosmic microwave background (CMB) between l ≈ 100 and 400 made at 144 GHz from Cerro Toco in Chilean altiplano. When new data are combined with previous 30 40 taken same instrument observing section sky, we find (1) rise to maximum δTl 85 μK 200 fall > 300, thereby localizing peak near 200, (2) that anisotropy has CMB.
The Atacama Cosmology Telescope was designed to measure small-scale anisotropies in the Cosmic Microwave Background and detect galaxy clusters through Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. instrument is located on Cerro Toco Desert, at an altitude of 5190 meters. A six-meter off-axis Gregorian telescope feeds a new type cryogenic receiver, Millimeter Bolometer Array Camera. receiver features three 1000-element arrays transition-edge sensor bolometers for observations 148 GHz, 218 277 GHz. Each detector...
We report on a measurement of the angular power spectrum anisotropy in cosmic microwave background (CMB). The is measured 23 different multipole bands from l = 54 (≈ 3°) to 404 045) and six frequency 26 46 GHz over three observing seasons. measurements are consistent year year. spectral index fluctuations (measured at low l) with that CMB inconsistent either dust or Galactic free-free emission. Furthermore, observations MSAM1-92 experiment (Cheng et al. 1994) repeated confirmed. shows...
Surface chlorophyll a concentrations in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) lagoon were monitored at individual stations for periods of 6 to 12 years. The monitoring program was established detect spatial and temporal changes water quality resulting from increased loads nutrients exported catchments adjoining GBR. Sampling occurred monthly up 86 sites that located transects across width continental shelf. In central southern GBR (16–21°S), there persistent cross-shelf gradient, with higher near...
The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) has made 1 deg2, deep, confusion-limited maps at three different bands, centered on the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey South Field. By calculating covariance of these with catalogs 24 μm sources from Far-Infrared Extragalactic Legacy Survey, we have determined that total submillimeter intensities are 8.60 ± 0.59, 4.93 0.34, and 2.27 0.20 nW m−2 sr−1 250, 350, 500 μm, respectively. These numbers more precise than...
The Balloon-borne Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (BLAST) is a suborbital surveying experiment designed to study the evolutionary history and processes of star formation in local galaxies (including Milky Way) at cosmological distances. BLAST continuum camera, which consists 270 detectors distributed between three arrays, observes simultaneously broadband (30%) spectral windows 250, 350, 500 μm. optical design based on 2 m diameter telescope, providing diffraction-limited resolution...
The GBR is losing its ability to recover from disturbances, but local management action can help partially restore this ability.
Abstract Australia's Great Barrier Reef ( GBR ) is under pressure from a suite of stressors including cyclones, crown‐of‐thorns starfish COTS ), nutrients river run‐off and warming events that drive mass coral bleaching. Two key questions are: how vulnerable will the be to future environmental scenarios, what extent can local management actions lower vulnerability in face climate change? To address these questions, we use simple empirical mechanistic model explore six scenarios represent...
A strong driver of water quality change in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is pulsed or intermittent nature terrestrial inputs into GBR lagoon, including delivery increased loads sediments, nutrients, and toxicants via flood river plumes (hereafter plumes) during wet season. Cumulative pressures from extreme weather with a high frequency large scale flooding recent years has been linked to reported decline health inshore seagrass systems coral reefs central areas GBR, concerns for recovery...
Abstract Near‐shore marine environments are increasingly subjected to reduced water quality, and their ability withstand it is critical persistence. The potential role reserves may play in mitigating the effects of quality has received little attention. We investigated spatial temporal variability live coral macro‐algal cover during moderate major flooding events Fitzroy River within Keppel Bay region Great Barrier Reef Marine Park from 2007 2013. used 7 years remote sensing data on...
Abstract Increasing direct human pressures on the marine environment, coupled with climate‐driven changes, is a concern to ecosystems globally. This requires development and monitoring of ecosystem indicators for effective management adaptation planning. Plankton lifeforms (broad functional groups) are sensitive environmental change can provide simplified view plankton biodiversity, building an understanding in lower trophic levels. Here, we visualize regional‐scale multi‐decadal trends six...
