Utilizing the thermooptical effect of polymers, a compact variable optical attenuator (VOA) based on multimode interference (MMI) is demonstrated. By directly modulating in MMI region according to overlapping imaging MMI, attenuation achieved. The device length less than 6 mm. experiment shows that VOA has 25-dB at driving power only 7.8 mW. response time around 3-4 ms. polarization-dependence loss 0.3 and 0.8 dB when 15 about 20 dB, respectively.
