Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) shows remarkably rapid growth (114.5 cm/day), but the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. After examining more than 12,750 internodes from 510 culms 17 populations, we identified internode 18 as a representative for growth. This includes 2-cm cell division zone (DZ), elongation up to 12 cm, and secondary wall (SCW) thickening zone. These zones elongated 11.8 produced approximately 570,000,000 cells, deposited ∼28 mg g-1 dry weight (DW) lignin...

Abstract Previous studies on the fast growth of bamboo shoots mainly focused entire culm. No work about elongation a single internode, which is basic unit for shoots, has been reported so far according to our knowledge. In this study, we have systematically investigated regulating mechanisms underlying internode Bambusa multiplex (Lour.) Raeusch. ex Schult. We discovered that displays logistic pattern, and two sections located in bottom one cell division and, another elongation, each with an...

Chlorophyll synthase catalyzes the final step in chlorophyll biosynthesis: esterification of chlorophyllide with either geranylgeranyl diphosphate or phytyl (PDP). Recent studies have pointed to involvement chlorophyll-linked reduction by reductase as a major pathway for synthesis PDP precursor tocopherols. This indirect suggests key role tocopherol production generate geranylgeranyl-chlorophyll substrate reductase. In this study, contributions formation Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana)...

Few studies about bamboo naturally occurring mutants have been reported so far. Using an integrated anatomy, mathematics and genomics approach, we systematically characterized the cellular molecular basis underlying abnormal internode development of Pseudosasa japonica var. tsutsumiana, a stable variant with dwarf swollen internodes that are caused by compressed spiral growth cells in bottom part internode. P. tsutsumiana is slow-growth disorderly cell division during fast stage. Comparative...

Sheath senescence is an important part of bamboo shoot development during the fast growth stage. However, no information has been reported about this distinctive process until now. Using multiple approaches, we found that sheath a complex occurs sequentially with chloroplast corruption, chlorophyll degradation and water loss. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), salicylic acid abscisic also accumulate in senescing sheath. Transcriptome analysis showed NAC WRKY transcription factors, such as NAC2...
