Electrophoretic data were analysed from 49 species of freshwater fish, 57 marine and seven anadromous species. For each species, at least 15 individuals had been assayed for loci in two or more subpopulations. The results showed that while average total heterozygosity ( H̄ T ) was approximately equal (0·062 0·064 respectively), subpopulation s significantly less the former group (0·046 0·059 respectively). Consequently degree genetic differentiation ST greater (0·222 v. 0·062). On average,...
Abstract Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was thought to be inherited maternally in animals, although paternal leakage has been reported mice and Drosophila. Recently, direct evidence of extensive inheritance mtDNA found the marine mussel Mytilus. We give that whereas female mussels are homoplasmic for a genome is transmitted eggs, male heteroplasmic this second preferentially sperm. The results provide support existence separate routes mussels. two genomes show base sequence divergence exceeding...
Starch gel electrophoresis was used to study variation at 11 loci in mussels sampled mainly from British coastal sites. Two types of mussel were identified, Mytilus edulis, the common and its southern relative galloprovincialis. Several partially diagnostic map distribution two forms. edulis present all sites Britain Ireland but low frequency SW England; M. galloprovincialis detected England, south west Ireland. Scotland NE absent Wales, Irish sea coasts Wales Ireland, SE England. Apart...
Abstract Pooling of samples in proteomics experiments might help overcome resource constraints when many individuals are analysed. The measured biological variation should be reduced giving increased power to detect treatment differences. has been advocated microarray work but there few tests its potential proteomics. In this study, we examine three issues on which the success pooling approach hinge and provide evidence that: (i) protein expression a pool matches mean making up for majority...
Dysregulated cholesterol metabolism is implicated in a number of neurological disorders. Many sterols, including and its precursors metabolites, are biologically active important for proper brain function. However, spatial the resulting sterol distributions poorly defined. To better understand situ across complex functional regions brain, we have developed on-tissue enzyme-assisted derivatization combination with microliquid extraction surface analysis liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry...
Studies of clinal variation have helped greatly in the elucidation mechanisms both adaptation and speciation (Endler 1977;Barton Hewitt 1989).Clines been explained by selection acting within a continuous population ( primary intergradation ) or, more frequently, as result contact between populations differentiated allopatry (secondary intergradation) 1989).However, frequent problem interpreting empirical studies allozyme or morphological clines is that secondary may generate similar...
Genetic variation was assayed electrophoretically at 13–16 loci in Modiolus modiolus, Mytilus edulis, and galloprovincialis. High genetic distance (D) values were observed between modiolus edulis (1.516 ± 0.523) galloprovincialis (1.564 0.539), whereas the M. (0.167 0.118) rather low. The systematic status ot is discussed relation to these lindings are used estimate divergence times which turn compared with paleontological estimates. observations of high average heterozygosity correlations...
Warthin's tumour of the salivary glands is composed oncocytic cells containing excessive numbers mitochondria which show frequent structural abnormalities and reduced metabolic function. Recent evidence a strong association between cigarette smoking occurrence prompted this study, to look for damage mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that could be result an increase in oxidative stress; two-colour fluorescence situ hybridization (FISH) was developed distribution with deleted mtDNA paraffin...
We propose definitions in terminology to enhance ongoing collaborations between biologists and modellers on plankton ecology. Organism "functional type" should refer commonality ecology not biogeochemistry; the latter is largely an emergent property of former, while alignment with also consistent usage terrestrial science. Adaptation be confined, as genetics, consideration species inter-generational change; most so-called "adaptive" models are thus acclimative, modifying vital rates response...
Nutrient acquisition is a critical determinant for the competitive advantage auto- and osmohetero- trophs alike. limited growth commonly described on whole cell basis through reference to maximum rate (Gmax) half-saturation constant (KG). This empirical application of Michaelis-Menten like description ignores multiple underlying feedbacks between physiology contributing growth, size, elemental stoichiometry motion. Here we explore these relationships with kinetics nutrient transporter...
