본 연구의 목적은 수학 영역에서 어려운 과제를 수행할 때 영재 학생의 흥미와 수행 수준을 향상시킬 수 있는 개인의 심리적 특성이 무엇인지 탐색하는 것이다. 이에 학생에게 해당 학년의 수학과 교육과정에서 과제와 쉬운 제공하고 인지 욕구와 위험 감수 성향의 수준에 따라 과제 수행이 어떻게 달라지는지 살펴보았다. 실험에는 서울시 교육청 영재교육원 초등학교 5, 6학년 학생 174명이 참여했으며 참여자들은 집단과 집단에 무선 할당되었다. 이 중 155명을 대상으로 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 초등 시기의 영재는 일반 학생들처럼 점수가 낮은 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 욕구가 높은 과제에서도 과제만큼 흥미를 수준으로 유지하는 것을 확인하였다. 특히 여학생 집단에서 유의미하게 나타나 교육의 입문기인 교육에서 욕구의 중요성을 시사하였다. 또한, 성향은 난이도가 수행에 미치는 영향을 조절하지 않았는데, 이는 집단이 창의적 성향보다는 학업 우수아의 특성을 가진다는 점을 시사한다.
