Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated fungal pathogen that causes cryptococcosis, which a major opportunistic infection in immunosuppressed individuals. Mammalian β-galactoside-binding protein Galectin-3 (Gal-3) modulates the host innate and adaptive immunity, plays significant roles during microbial infections including some diseases. Here we show this role also C. infection. We find augmented Gal-3 serum levels human experimental infections, as well spleen, lung, brain tissues of...

Immunocompromised patients are susceptible to several fungal infections. The genus Aspergillus can cause increased morbidity and mortality. Developing new therapies is essential understand the biology mechanisms. Fungal EVs carry important virulence factors, thus playing pivotal roles in pathophysiology. No study date has reported EV production by flavus , a fungus considered be second most common of aspergillosis relevant food contaminator found worldwide. In this study, we produced A....

Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) is one of the most important causes disability worldwide. While recent work provides insights into molecular alterations in brain patients with MDD, whether these signatures can be associated expression specific symptom domains remains unclear. Here, we identified sex-specific gene modules combining differential and co-expression network analyses six cortical subcortical regions. Our results show varying levels homology between males females across...

Candida albicans is a commensal fungus in healthy humans that causes infection immunocompromised individuals through the secretion of several virulence factors. The successful establishment owing to elaborate strategies cope with defensive molecules secreted by host, including responses toward oxidative stress. Extracellular vesicle (EV) release considered an alternative biomolecule secretory mechanism favors fungal interactions host cells. During candidiasis establishment, environment...

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular protozoan parasite found worldwide that able to chronically infect almost all vertebrate species, especially birds and mammalians. Chitinases are essential various biological processes, some pathogens rely on chitinases for successful parasitization. Here, we purified characterized a chitinase from T. gondii. The enzyme, provisionally named Tg_chitinase, has molecular mass of 13.7 kDa exhibits Km 0.34 mM Vmax 2.64. optimal environmental...

Paracoccidioidomycosis is the most prevalent systemic mycosis in Latin America. It caused by temperature-dependent dimorphic fungus Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The P. brasiliensis cell wall a dynamic outer structure, composed of network glycoproteins and polysaccharides, such as chitin, glucan N-glycosylated proteins. These can interact with host to affect infection rates, are known perform other functions. We inhibited N-linked glycosylation using tunicamycin (TM), then evaluated...

Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is the most studied member of animal galectin family, which comprises β-galactoside-binding lectins and participates in several cellular events. Its expression cells involved innate adaptive immunity related to anti- proinflammatory functions, signaling an important role inflammatory, infectious, tumorigenesis processes. Mice deficient Gal-3 exhibit phenotypes, but it unclear whether these phenotypes reflect impairment functions this protein. plays modulating immune...

Abstract Fungal infections are associated with high mortality rates in humans. The risk of fungal diseases creates the urgent need to broaden knowledge base regarding their pathophysiology. In this sense, role extracellular vesicles (EVs) has been described convey biological information and participate fungal-host interaction process. EVs play many roles, including cellular physiology, responding environmental cues, mediating a complex circuit communication bidirectional crosstalk other...

ABSTRACT Candida haemulonii comprises a group of pathogenic fungi known for their resistance to primary antifungal treatments. Infections caused by these pathogens present substantial challenges due the difficulties in accurate identification. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released play critical role pathogen-host interaction, potentially influencing and virulence. Previous research our indicates that EVs contain immunogenic particles capable impacting host’s immune response. Understanding...

Abstract Anxiety and depressive disorders, including major disorder (MDD), affect millions of people every year, imposing significant socio-economic burdens. In this scenario, current treatments for MDD show limited efficacy, highlighting the need to better understand its molecular mechanisms. The medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) has been identified as a critical brain region in pathology, displaying altered activity morphology. This study targets mPFC-to-nucleus accumbens (NAc) pathway,...
