Background/Objectives: The effects of ageing on the diaphragm are unclear. This study examined association between and thickness, thickening fraction (TF), excursion (DE) as assessed by ultrasonography after adjusting for other factors. relationship these parameters maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP) was also investigated. Methods: From 2022 to 2024, ambulatory communicative adult volunteers outpatients were recruited from four Japanese medical institutions. Each participant’s background...
Diaphragm ultrasonography is used to identify causes of diaphragm dysfunction. However, its correlation with pulmonary function tests, including maximal inspiratory (MIP) and expiratory pressures (MEP), remains unclear. This study investigated this relationship by measuring thickness, thickening fraction (TF), excursion (DE) using ultrasonography, their MIP MEP. It also examined the influence age, sex, height, BMI on these measures.

Few studies have compared the effectiveness of brief training courses on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) skill acquisition novice attending physicians vs. trainees. The purpose this study was to evaluate change in POCUS image interpretation skills and confidence trainees after a 1-day course.A course held March 2017 Japan. A standardized curriculum developed that included online education, live lectures, hands-on training. pre-course assessment tools written examination baseline knowledge...
Background/Objectives: The diaphragm is important for respiration, but the effects of age-related muscle loss and sarcopenia on function are unclear. We evaluated associations skeletal mass (SMM) with function. Methods: This study was conducted at three Japanese hospitals from May 2023 to September 2024. participants underwent bioelectrical impedance SMM assessment, as well pulmonary tests. Diaphragm ultrasound used measure thickness functional residual capacity (FRC), thickening fraction...
Abstract Background Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a valuable skill for generalist physicians, nurse practitioners (NPs), and nurses; however, its utilization remains limited. This study was performed to investigate the current status, barriers, facilitators of POCUS implementation among NPs, nurses in family hospital medicine Japan identify differences influencing factors between physicians NPs/nurses. Results A web-based survey distributed via mailing lists four major academic...
To compare the use of point-of-care ultrasound between physicians providing home medical care and other in Japan. A cross-sectional comparative study. The participants were members 3 societies related to web-based survey was conducted April June 2024 assess ultrasound, physicians' training history needs this technique, machine availability types, barriers facilitators for wider adoption. Overall, 692 (461 care) participated. There more users among those (75.9% vs 67.1%; P = .014). no...
In Japan, the nurse practitioner (NP) system has only been in place for a short time, and there is no ultrasound (US) simulation course NPs. Therefore, NPs may have to attend US courses physicians. We evaluated whether physicians lead improved image acquisition interpretation amongst and, if so, these changes would be maintained over time.A 2-day point-of-care (POCUS) designed cardiac US, lung lower extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT) abdominal was held Japanese practitioners (JNP) JNP...
To determine the most sensitive scoring method for assessment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) disease activity using American College Rheumatology Core Data Set.The subjects were 4,530 patients with RA (mean age 57.9 years, mean duration 12.7 years) who participated in a large observational cohort study patients. The 68 joints assessed classified into 15 joint areas, and each variable was categorized based on presence or absence swelling pain these areas. Multiple linear regression analysis...
Abstract Background and Aim Lymph node metastasis is an important prognostic factor for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC), but accurate preoperative diagnosis difficult. The aim of this study was to measure the concentration serum carbohydrate antigen 19‐9 (s‐CA19‐9) as a predictor lymph metastasis. Methods In our department, curative‐intent hepatectomy ICC has been performed only once absence metastases in para‐aortic nodes (PALN) confirmed from intraoperative frozen‐section...
Aim We investigated personal protective equipment (PPE) use and supply shortage, training, adverse events among health‐care workers (HCWs) in the intensive care unit (ICU) during coronavirus disease (COVID‐19) pandemic Japan compared results with an international survey that used same methodology. Methods This Web‐based was carried out from 14 April to 6 May, 2020, included HCWs directly involved ICU management of COVID‐19 patients. A invitation emailed using Japanese Society Intensive Care...
Measurements of diaphragm function by ultrasonography are affected body position, but reference values in the seated position have not been established for an Asian population. This study aimed to determine thickness, thickening fraction, and dome excursion investigate effects sex, height, mass index.
Abstract Background POCUS training courses are effective at improving knowledge and skills, but few studies have followed learners longitudinally post-course to understand facilitators, barriers, changes in use clinical practice. We conducted a prospective observational study of physicians who attended 11 standardized between 2017 2019 Japan. Physicians course were surveyed about their current frequency the heart, lung, abdomen, lower extremity veins, perceived barriers facilitators Results...
Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major impediment to successful chemotherapy for lung cancer. Overexpression of multidrug resistance-associated protein 1 (MRP1) appears be involved in MDR development cancer cells. A number chemotherapeutic agents including doxorubicin (DOX) were reported induce MRP1 expression human In our study, we investigated the mechanism by which DOX induces small cell (SCLC) lines, GLC4 and NCI-H82. These cells expressed at low levels sensitive DOX. Doxorubicin 50 nM...
Nivolumab combination chemotherapy has recently emerged as a potential first-line treatment for patients with unresectable or metastatic gastric cancer (GC). Further research indicated that R0 resection by conversion surgery could be an effective strategy to improve overall survival. However, there have been limited reports on the successful application of following achieving pathological complete response (pCR) in cases advanced remnant liver metastasis. Here, we present case long-term...
Physical activity (PA) is considered as one of the most important prognostic predictors in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Longevity gene, SIRT1, reported to be involved pathogenesis COPD by regulating signaling pathways oxidative stress, inflammation, and aging. We hypothesize that SIRT1 related genes are also associated with benefits PA patients.Eighteen outpatients were enrolled this study, their level was assessed an accelerometer. mRNA expression levels peripheral...
To identify the current ambiguous status of general medicine (GM) and assess problems weaknesses for further development GM.This study adopted an observational design. GM practitioners were selected from mailing lists two primary professional associations Japanese doctors. We included physicians currently working in a department, those self-described as doctors, board-certified family or internal medicine. Respondents replied to survey questions about their sociodemographic data, job...
Aims/Introduction: It has been reported that metabolic syndrome is associated with impaired lung function, and abdominal obesity regarded as the most important determinant of this association. We evaluated association between a component syndrome, indices body composition, including total adipose tissue content, lean bodyweight visceral assessed by bioimpedance analysis, function. A 516 participants responded to our questionnaire determine smoking status history past diseases. Waist...
The multiple mini-interview (MMI) is increasingly used for postgraduate medical admissions and in undergraduate settings. MMIs use mostly Situational Questions (SQs) rather than Past-Behavioural (PBQs). A previous study of this setting, where PBQs SQs were asked the same order, reported that reliability was non-inferior to more acceptable candidates. order which questions are may affect acceptability an MMI. This investigated MMI using both SQs, minimising question bias. Acceptability also...
