Seismological observation has revealed the ubiquitous presence of small-scale seismic scatterers with significant shear velocity reduction in mid-lower mantle. In particular, more than 70% scatters were observed at depths 700-1300 km, while 20% them are distributed 1300-1900 km depth. Only less 10% detected exceeding 1900 km. The phase transition from stishovite rutile-type structure to post-stishovite CaCl2-type SiO2 subducted oceanic crusts was regarded as main reason for these scatterers....
Abstract We have simultaneously measured thermal conductivity ( λ ) and diffusivity κ for polycrystalline ferropericlase with different Fe contents (Fp 3 , Fp 5 10 20 30 50 up to 23 GPa 1100 K by a pulse heating method. Experiment results reveals that even small amounts of in can strongly reduce the several times at low temperature compared MgO periclase. With increasing ferropericlase, both their pressure dependence decrease. Fe‐bearing is not sensitive silicates shows tendency first then...
Oceanic lithosphere moves over a mechanically weak layer (asthenosphere) characterized by low seismic velocity and high attenuation. Near mid-ocean ridges, partial melting can produce such conditions because of the high-temperature geotherm. However, observations have also shown large sharp reduction under oceanic plates at lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary (LAB) far from ridges. Here, we report effect water on properties olivine aggregates in water-undersaturated 3 GPa 1,223 to 1,373 K via...
Abstract In this study, we have investigated the crystal structure and equation of state tetragonal CaSiO3-perovskite up to 200 GPa using synchrotron X-ray diffraction in laser-heated diamond-anvil cells. patterns quenched above 148 clearly show that 200, 211, 220 peaks cubic phase split into 004+220, 204+312, 224+400 peak pairs, respectively, structure, their calculated full-width at half maximum (FWHM) exhibits a substantial increase with pressure. The distribution suggests most likely has...
Anelastic measurement by cyclic loading under high pressure has been developed means of in situ X-ray observation at a synchrotron facility. In this method, the reference material is key factor to precisely determine attenuation and moduli unknown materials. We compared performance three types materials (dense polycrystalline alumina, alumina single-crystal parallel c-axis, flexible graphite) 3 GPa temperature range between 1173 1373 K. The phase lags strain samples show that graphite less...
