BACKGROUND In a study using split-sample design, liquid-based cytology (ThinPrep® Processor, Cytyc Corporation, Boxborough, MA) was compared with the conventional Papanicolaou (Pap) smear in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The provides first population-based comparison of ThinPrep® screening technology and includes "gold standard" measures diagnostic accuracy. METHODS performed among over 8000 women residing Rican province high incidence cervical carcinoma. Conventional smears were prepared...

To examine human leukocyte antigen (HLA) involvement in the development of all grades cervical neoplasia, a nested case-control study 10,077 women Guanacaste, Costa Rica, was conducted. Participants had invasive cancer, high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs; n=166), or low-grade (LSILs); were positive for papillomavirus (HPV) with no evidence neoplasia (n=320); HPV negative but history high-risk sexual behavior (n=173). Compared who negative, HLA-DRB1*1301 associated decreased...

Automated cytology devices have utility in quality assurance applications, but the effectiveness of these primary screening is unknown.Enrollment smears obtained from 7323 women participating a population-based study sponsored by National Cancer Institute were screened manually Costa Rica and then evaluated independently U.S. with PAPNET system (Neuromedical Systems, Inc., Suffern, NY), semiautomated, neural network-based device. Smears abnormal images microscopically rescreened diagnosed...

Two trials of clinically approved human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, Females United to Unilaterally Reduce Endo/Ectocervical Disease (FUTURE I/II) and the Papilloma Trial Against Cancer in Young Adults (PATRICIA), reported a 22% difference vaccine efficacy (VE) against cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse HPV-naïve subcohorts; however, serological testing methods HPV DNA criteria used define HPV-unexposed women differed between studies. A Bayesian approach has been applied to estimate the distribution of magnitudes, interevent distances and times earthquakes occurred in 2017 central Italy by using a small amount random samples drawn from same seismic parameters for 2014-2016. We method whole aftershock-depleted seismicity exponential normal model fit distributions parameters. Our findings indicate that fits much better than model.
