To assess the impact of chronic viral liver disease (CVLD) on hospital admissions and death in HIV-infected patients since introduction highly active antiretroviral therapy, all charts, from January 1996 to December 2000, a large HIV/AIDS reference center Madrid were reviewed. Discharge diagnosis, complications during inpatient period, number causes recorded. A total 1334 involving 875 individuals was Up 82% them either or former intravenous drug users. Overall, 158 (11.8%) admitted because...
Injection of large doses ammonium salts lead to the rapid death animals. However, molecular mechanisms involved in ammonia toxicity remain be clarified. We have tested effect injecting 7 mmol/kg acetate on production superoxide and activities some antioxidant enzymes rat liver, brain, erythrocytes plasma. Glutathione peroxidase, dismutase catalase were decreased liver brain (both cytoso-lic mitochondrial fractions) also blood red cells, while glutathione reductase activity remained...
Herein, we have studied a consanguineous Egyptian family with two children diagnosed severe autosomal recessive osteogenesis imperfecta (AR-OI) and large umbilical hernia. Homozygosity mapping in this showed lack of linkage to any the previously known AR-OI genes, but revealed 10.27 MB homozygous region on chromosome 8p affected sibs, which comprised procollagen I C-terminal propeptide (PICP) endopeptidase gene BMP1. Mutation analysis identified both patients Phe249Leu missense change within...
Although doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine (ABVD) is considered the standard chemotherapy regimen for Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL), information on results of this therapy in human immunodeficiency (HIV)-related HL scarce. We analyzed ABVD highly active antiretroviral (HAART) patients with advanced stage, HIV-related HL.From January 1996 to December 2005, 62 HIV-infected newly diagnosed were treated 15 Spanish hospitals. Six eight cycles HAART planned. Response chemotherapy,...
Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is involved in patterning and morphogenesis of most organs the developing mammalian embryo. Despite many advances understanding core components pathway, little known about how activity Hh pathway adjusted organ- tissue-specific developmental processes. Mutations EVC or EVC2 disrupt tooth bone development. Using mouse models, we show here that Evc Evc2 are mutually required for localizing to primary cilia also maintaining their normal protein levels. Consistent with...
PLOD2 and FKBP10 are genes mutated in Bruck syndrome (BS), a condition resembling osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), but that is also typically associated with congenital joint contractures. Herein, we sought mutations six consanguineous BS families detected changes either or all cases. Two probands were found homozygous frameshift mutation the alternative exon 13a of PLOD2, indicating specific inactivation longer protein isoform encoded by this gene sufficient to cause BS. In addition,...
The preferred treatment of type-II supracondylar humeral fractures remains controversial. purpose this study was to evaluate the long-term clinical and radiographic outcome in children treated with immobilization a splint without reduction. The medical records forty-six consecutive patients who sustained Gartland fracture humerus were reviewed. Age at time fracture, sex, side involved, dominant extremity, duration immobilization, complications recorded. Radiographic assessment included...
Abstract The aim of this transversal study was to describe the virological and immunological features HIV-infected youths transferred from pediatric adult care units since 1997 vs. non-transferred patients Madrid Cohort children adolescents in Spain. We included 106 184 under clinical follow-up 17 public hospitals by end December 2017. Virological outcomes were compared patients. ART drug resistance mutations HIV-variants analyzed all subjects with available pol genotypes and/or genotypic...
Background: The role of arthroscopic Latarjet as a revision surgery after failed Bankart repair has yet to be established. Purpose: To compare clinical outcomes, recurrences, and complication rates procedure versus primary procedure. Design: Cohort study; Level evidence, 3. Methods: This is retrospective study prospectively collected data patients who were diagnosed with anterior shoulder instability underwent stabilization between 2009 2018. Patients separated into 2 groups depending on...
Twenty-eight HIV patients either naive or failing highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)with moderate-advanced Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)were randomly chosen to initiate a new HAART regimen plus pegylated liposomal doxorubicin(PLD) the alone. After 48 weeks, better response rates were observed in PLD group (76% versus 20%). In HIV-infected with KS, alone may not be enough for KS response.
Chorea is a rare manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this report the clinical features two cases chorea associated with SLE are presented. Of special interest were raised titres antiphospholipid antibodies in both cases. The possible pathogenic role these briefly discussed.
Objectives: We analyzed survival, therapeutic response, and prognostic factors in patients with HIV-related Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) treated or not highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). Methods: This study included 104 HL, (n = 83) 21) HAART. Outcomes of complete remission (CR), overall survival (OS), disease-free (DFS) were assessed by an intention-to-treat analysis all who received at least 1 chemotherapy course. Results: No differences found between groups baseline the specific...
Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is uncommon among HIV-positive patients. However, it a potentially life-threatening condition. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) noninvasive tool validated for PAH screening. The aim of our study was to establish the prevalence and factors associated with in HIV-infected patients.Consecutive individuals attended at one HIV reference clinic Madrid, Spain, during year 2011 were examined. Demographics clinical data recorded Doppler performed all...
It has been reported that most neurological injuries after sustaining a supracondylar fracture will usually resolve spontaneously in the first months; however, studies are lacking regarding influence of these upper limb functionality long-term follow-up. The aim this study is to report functional outcome complications associated pediatric fractures.Medical records 448 children who sustained humeral were reviewed. Patients with concomitant injury included. Clinical evaluation included grip...
Most patients with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome (EvC) are identified pathogenic changes in EVC or EVC2, however further genetic heterogeneity has been suggested. In this report we describe splicing variants WDR35, encoding retrograde intraflagellar transport protein 121 (IFT121), three families a clinical diagnosis of EvC but having distinctive phenotype. To understand why WDR35 result EvC, analysed EVC, EVC2 and Smoothened (SMO) IFT-A deficient cells. We found that the proteins failed to...
Objectives Sexualized intravenous drug use, also known as slamsex, seems to be increasing among HIV-positive men who have sex with (MSM). Physical and psychopathological symptoms previously been reported in this population, although research on the subject of slamsex is scarce. The objectives our study were describe background a sample MSM engaged during previous year compare physical, psychopathological, drug-related between these participants those non-injecting sexualized use. Design...
The in-vitro susceptibilities of 40 clinical isolates Candida albicans to ketoconazole and fluconazole were determined an attempt was made correlate these data with the responses patients from whom strains originally isolated treatment agents. Of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) oropharyngeal and/or oesophageal candidosis, 21 received 19 fluconazole. Susceptiblity testing performed by a microbroth dilution method RPMI-2% glucose medium according recommendations National Committee...
Incidence of Kaposi sarcoma (KS) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected persons has dramatically decreased the highly active antiretroviral therapy era. However, this tumor still represents most common cancer population. The objectives study were to evaluate long-term prognosis HIV-infected patients with KS who had received pegylated liposomal doxorubicin (PLD) and, more specifically, assess relapse rate, mortality, and cause death these subjects. This was a retrospective review all...
Autosomal recessive Ellis-van Creveld syndrome and autosomal dominant Weyer acrodental dysostosis are allelic conditions caused by mutations in EVC or EVC2. We performed a mutation screening study 36 EvC cases 3 of dysostosis, identified pathogenic changes either EVC2 all cases. detected 40 independent EVC/EVC2 which 29 were novel 2 pedigrees. Of interest one patient had T>G nucleotide substitution intron 7 (c.940−150T>G), creates new donor splice site results the inclusion exon. The is at...
