Abstract Some clusters of children with a multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) associated severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have been reported. We describe the epidemiological and clinical features MIS-C in Spain. is potentially condition that presents recent SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Abstract Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) infections are associated with severe respiratory disease and acute flaccid myelitis (AFM). The European Non-Polio Network (ENPEN) aimed to investigate the epidemiological genetic characteristics of EV-D68 its clinical impact during fall-winter season 2021–2022. From 19 countries, 58 institutes reported 10 481 (6.8%) EV-positive samples which 1004 (9.6%) were identified as (including 852 samples). Clinical data for 969 cases; 78.9% in children (0–5 years);...
Introduction Abbreviations used in this article: IE, infective endocarditis, IVDU, intravenous drug users, TEE, transesophageal echocardiography, TTE, transthoracic echocardiography. Despite great medical progress, endocarditis (IE) remains a serious infection that affects number of patients each year (7,28,67). During the last 2 decades, profound changes have taken place susceptible populations, distribution responsible microorganisms, accuracy diagnostic techniques, and procedures for...
Abstract The aim of this transversal study was to describe the virological and immunological features HIV-infected youths transferred from pediatric adult care units since 1997 vs. non-transferred patients Madrid Cohort children adolescents in Spain. We included 106 184 under clinical follow-up 17 public hospitals by end December 2017. Virological outcomes were compared patients. ART drug resistance mutations HIV-variants analyzed all subjects with available pol genotypes and/or genotypic...
We report the results of a case-control study postsurgical mediastinitis (PSM) that we conducted from 1985 to 1993. The incidence PSM was 2.2% (81 3,711 cases who underwent sternotomy); analyzed findings for 73 and controls. Univariate analysis revealed risk factors were emergency surgery (27% vs. 13% controls), New York Heart Association functional class IV (46.5% 21.9%), heart transplantation (12% 0), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) (60% 41%). incidences fever, reoperation bleeding,...
We aimed to identify the spectrum of disease in children with COVID-19, and risk factors for admission paediatric intensive care units (PICUs). conducted a multicentre, prospective study SARS-CoV-2 infection 76 Spanish hospitals. included COVID-19 or multi-inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) younger than 18 years old, attended during first year pandemic. enrolled 1200 children. A total 666 (55.5%) were hospitalised, 123 (18.4%) required PICU. Most frequent major clinical syndromes cohort mild...
Background: An epidemiological study of Streptococcus pneumoniae nasopharyngeal carriage in healthy children was carried out five years after the introduction 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). Objectives: Study impact pediatric vaccination with PCV13, and other associated factors on status carriage, circulating serotypes, antibiotic susceptibility to more frequently used antibiotics. Methods: A multi-center Primary Health Care, which included 1821 aged 1 4 old. All isolates...
We estimated the effect of remote BCG vaccination on tuberculin reactivity and booster among hospital employees.Cross-sectional survey at a university hospital. All personnel employed during 24-month period were included in study. Employees administered 2-step testing, scars verified.Of 665 employees studied, 239 (36%) had been vaccinated with childhood. Significant reactions (> or =5 mm) more frequent BCG-vaccinated (60%) than nonvaccinated (29%) (odds ratio [OR], 3.6; 95% confidence...
Enteroviruses (EVs) and human parechoviruses (HPeVs) are a major cause of central nervous system (CNS) infection in young infants. They have been implicated neurodevelopmental delay, however limited data available. The aim this study is to describe the clinical outcome infants assess compare medium-term neurodevelopment following CNS infections caused by EV HPeV. A multicentre observational ambispective was conducted between May 2013 March 2018. Children under 3 months age with or HPeV...
Background In 2023, a European alert was issued regarding an increase in severe enterovirus (EV) neonatal infections associated with echovirus 11 (E11) new lineage 1. Aim To analyse E11-positive cases between 2019 and 2023 to investigate whether the 1 circulated Spain causing infections. Methods EV-positive samples from hospitalised are sent for typing National Reference Enterovirus Laboratory. Available 2022–23 were subjected metagenomic next-generation sequencing. Results Of 1,288...
We compare a rapid dilution method for the determination of antiviral susceptibility herpes simplex virus (HSV) with plaque reduction assay. A total 84 HSV clinical isolates were studied by both methods to detect in-vitro resistance acyclovir and foscarnet. The showed detection resistant foscarnet, sensitivity 96. 8% 100% specificity 100%, respectively. This provides an easy accurate screening procedure testing agents.
Introduction: After the introduction of combination antiretroviral treatment, (ART) mortality in HIV-infected patients has dramatically decreased. However, it is still high at risk, as adolescents transitioning to adult care (AC) without virologic control. The aim this study was characterize and comorbidities perinatally infected HIV (PHIV) after transition AC. Methods: A multicenter retrospective from included CoRISpe-FARO Spanish cohort conducted. PHIV who died AC between 2009 2019 were...
Human parechovirus (HPeV) is one of the recently described picornaviridae viruses that have been associated with fever without source (FWS), clinical sepsis, gastroenteritis, meningitis, or encephalitis in very young infants. The aim this study to describe epidemiology and features these viruses. A prospective multicentre 3-year was conducted 12 hospitals Spain. Out 850 specimens examined, 47 were positive (5.52%), HPeV-3 being most frequent (29 cases). Infections occurred throughout year,...
