Abstract An ongoing pandemic of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is caused by infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Characterization the histopathology and cellular localization SARS-CoV-2 in tissues patients fatal COVID-19 critical to further understand its pathogenesis transmission for public health prevention measures. We report clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical, electron microscopic findings from 8 laboratory-confirmed cases United States. All except 1 were...

Abstract Zika virus (ZIKV) invades and persists in the central nervous system (CNS), causing severe neurological diseases. However journey, from bloodstream to tissues through a mature endothelium, remains unclear. Here, we show that ZIKV-infected monocytes represent suitable carriers for viral dissemination CNS using human primary monocytes, cerebral organoids derived embryonic stem cells, organotypic mouse cerebellar slices, xenotypic human-zebrafish model, fetus brain samples. We find...

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral disease seen exclusively in humans. Central nervous system (CNS) infection and neurological involvement have also been reported CCHF. In the current study, we inoculated NSG-SGM3 mice engrafted with human hematopoietic CD34+ stem cells low-passage CCHF virus strains isolated from patients. humanized mice, lethal develops, characterized by histopathological change liver brain. To date, targets of not investigated CNS was gliosis,...

Here we describe clinicopathologic features of Ebola virus disease in pregnancy. One woman infected with Sudan Gulu, Uganda, 2000 had a stillbirth and survived, another Bundibugyo live birth maternal infant death Isiro, the Democratic Republic Congo 2012. Ebolavirus antigen was seen syncytiotrophoblast placental mononuclear cells by immunohistochemical analysis, no fetal stromal or organs. In Gulu case, ebolavirus localized to malarial parasite pigment–laden macrophages. These data suggest...

Chlamydia trachomatis genital infection in women causes serious adverse reproductive complications, and is a strong co-factor for human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated cervical epithelial carcinoma. We tested the hypothesis that induces epithelial-mesenchyme transition (EMT) involving T cell-derived TNF-alpha signaling, caspase activation, cleavage inactivation of dicer dysregulation micro-RNA (miRNA) epithelium; pathologic process EMT fibrosis fertility-related dysfunction, also provides...

Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF), a tick-borne zoonosis caused by Rickettsia rickettsii, is among the deadliest of all infectious diseases. To identify distribution various genotypes R. rickettsii associated with fatal RMSF, we applied molecular typing methods to samples DNA extracted from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimens obtained at autopsy 103 case-patients seven countries who died RMSF. Complete sequences one or more intergenic regions were amplified tissues 30 (29%)...

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causes disease in mink similar to human COVID-19. We characterized the pathological findings 72 from US farms with SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks, localized and its host cellular receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE2) tissues, evaluated utility of various test methods specimens for detection necropsy tissues. Of SARS-CoV-2-positive animals found dead, 74% had bronchiolitis diffuse alveolar damage (DAD). euthanized animals, 72% only...

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection during pregnancy can cause adverse fetal outcomes and severe irreversible congenital birth defects including microcephaly. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a valuable diagnostic tool for detecting ZIKV antigens in tissues from cases of loss women infected with ZIKV, providing insights into disease pathogenesis. As result, there increasing demand commercially available antibodies use IHC assays. were selected obtained commercial sources to include both mouse rabbit...

Lassa virus (LASV), a hemorrhagic fever endemic to West Africa, causes conjunctivitis in patients with acute disease. To examine ocular manifestations of LASV, we histologically examined eyes from infected guinea pigs. In fatal disease, LASV immunostaining was most prominent the anterior uvea, especially filtration angle, ciliary body, and iris around vessels bulbar conjunctiva peripheral cornea, where it co-localized an endothelial marker (platelet cell adhesion molecule).
