ABSTRACT Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) strains, which often produce Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL), are increasingly noted worldwide. In this study, we examined 42 MRSA strains (25 PVL-positive [PVL + ] and 17 PVL-negative − strains) isolated in Taiwan for their molecular characteristics. The PVL included CA-MRSA with multilocus sequence type (ST) 59 (major Taiwan), its variants, worldwide ST30 strains. the pandemic Hungarian ST239 strain,...

ABSTRACT Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) was collected from children with bullous impetigo in 2003 and 2004. One strain Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL) positive. In 2004, a multiple-drug-resistant PVL + CA-MRSA isolated an athlete cutaneous abscess. These strains were analyzed by multilocus sequence typing, spa agr coagulase staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCC ) PCR assay for 30 virulence genes, drug susceptibility testing, pulsed-field gel...

Background. Tenofovir is a widely used antiretroviral drug although it can cause kidney tubular dysfunction (KTD). The aim of this study was to determine the association between polymorphisms in genes encoding transporters and KTD Japanese patients treated with tenofovir. Methods. tenofovir-induced 14 single nucleotide (SNPs) ABCC2, ABCC4, ABCC10, SCL22A6, ABCB1 investigated 190 patients. diagnosed by presence at least 3 abnormalities following parameters: fractional resorption phosphate,...

AimsAlthough dietary saturated fatty acids (SFA) are considered atherogenic, associations between SFAs intake and stroke coronary heart disease still debated. We sought to test the hypothesis that SFA is associated inversely with risk of its subtypes positively among Japanese, whose average lower than Westerners.

SUMMARY Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is of concern in Japan, where the heptavalent conjugate vaccine (PCV7) unavailable. We determined serotypes, genotypes indicating β-lactam resistance, and antibiotic susceptibilities 496 isolates from normally sterile sites patients (193 children, 303 adults) 186 institutions between August 2006 July 2007. Disease presentations included sepsis (46·2%), pneumonia (31·5%), meningitis (17·5%). Mortality was 1·4% children 22·1% adults, many whom had...

The ST5 lineage of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is one the most globally disseminated hospital-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) lineages. We isolated a new local variant (designated ST764) over at least 5 years that causes invasive infections, including necrotizing fasciitis, and carried by medical students, as well household members. Analysis genome sequence isolate compared to reference strain revealed ST764 had acquired virulence traits similar those community-associated...
