Thousands of exoplanets have now been discovered with a huge range masses, sizes and orbits: from rocky Earth-like planets to large gas giants grazing the surface their host star. However, essential nature these remains largely mysterious: there is no known, discernible pattern linking presence, size, or orbital parameters planet its parent We little idea whether chemistry linked formation environment, type star drives physics planet's birth, evolution. ARIEL was conceived observe number...
The Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey (ARIEL) is one of the three candidate missions selected by European Space Agency (ESA) for its next medium-class science mission due launch in 2026. goal ARIEL to investigate atmospheres several hundred planets orbiting distant stars order address fundamental questions on how planetary systems form and evolve. During four (with a potential extension six) years will observe 500+ exoplanets visible infrared with meter-class...
Abstract Monitoring of vibrational eigenmodes an elastic body excited by gravitational waves was one the first concepts proposed for detection waves. At laboratory scale, these experiments became known as resonant bar detectors developed Joseph Weber in 1960s. Due to dimensions bars, targeted signal frequencies were kHz range. also pointed out that monitoring vibrations Earth or Moon could reveal mHz band. His Lunar Surface Gravimeter experiment deployed on Apollo 17 crew had a technical...
Abstract The ExoClock project is an inclusive, integrated, and interactive platform that was developed to monitor the ephemerides of Ariel targets increase mission efficiency. makes best use all available resources, i.e., observations from ground telescopes, midtime values literature, finally, space instruments. Currently, network includes 280 participants with telescopes capable observing 85% currently known candidate targets. This work results ∼1600 obtained up 2020 December 31 network....
In this Letter we report the first experiments aimed at simultaneous demonstration of emittance compensation process and velocity bunching in a high brightness electron source, SPARC photoinjector INFN-LNF. While maximum compression ratio up to factor 14 has been observed, particular case interest 3, yielding slice current 120 A with less than 2 μm emittance, measured. This technique may be crucial achieving beams photoinjectors aiming optimized performance short wavelength single-pass free...
SPARC (acronym of ``Sorgente Pulsata ed Amplificata di Radiazione Coerente'', i.e. Pulsed and Amplified Source Coherent Radiation) is a single pass free-electron laser designed to obtain high gain amplification at radiation wavelength 500 nm. Self-amplified spontaneous emission has been observed driving the amplifier with high-brightness beam linac. We report measurements energy, spectra, exponential gain. Experimental results are compared simulations from several numerical codes.
Ultra-short electron beams, produced through the velocity bunching compression technique, are used to drive SPARC linear accelerator based source, which relies on emission of coherent transition radiation in terahertz range. This paper reports main features this radiation, as with spectral coverage up 5 THz and pulse duration down 200 fs, an energy per order several micro-joule, beam longitudinal diagnostics.
The linac driven coherent THz radiation source at the SPARC-LAB test facility is able to deliver broadband pulses with femtosecond shaping. In addition, high peak power, narrow spectral bandwidth can be also generated, taking advantage of advanced electron beam manipulation techniques, generate an adjustable train bunches a sub-picosecond length and spacing. paper reports on manipulation, characterization, transport in bending line transporting down station, where different transition...
In this Letter we report the first experimental observation of double emittance minimum effect in beam dynamics high-brightness electron generation by photoinjectors; effect, as predicted theory, is crucial achieving photoinjectors aiming at producing beams for short wavelength single-pass free lasers. The experiment described was performed SPARC photoinjector site, during stage commissioning project. made possible a newly conceived device, called an meter, which allows detailed and...
The machine described in this document is an advanced Source of up to 20 MeV Gamma Rays based on Compton back-scattering, i.e. collision intense high power laser beam and a brightness electron with maximum kinetic energy about 720 MeV. Fully equipped collimation characterization systems, order generate, form fully measure the physical characteristics produced Ray beam. quality, phase space density, two colliding beams will be such that emitted ray characterized by tunability, spectral...
ABSTRACT Two meteorite pieces have been recovered in Italy, near the town of Cavezzo (Modena), on 2020 January 4th. The associated fireball was observed evening New Year’s Day by eight all-sky cameras PRISMA network, a partner FRIPON. computed trajectory had an inclination angle approximately 68° and velocity at infinity 12.8 km s−1. Together with relatively low terminal height, estimated as 21.5 km, those values were indicating significant possibility dropping event, additionally confirmed...
Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously visible infrared wavelengths. It is first dedicated measuring chemical composition thermal structures hundreds transiting exoplanets, enabling...
The new generation of linac injectors driving free electron lasers in the self-amplified stimulated emission (SASE-FEL) regime requires high brightness beams to generate radiation wavelength range from UV x rays. choice injector working point and its matching structure are key factors meet this requirement. An emittance compensation scheme presently applied several photoinjectors worldwide is known as "Ferrario" point. In spite great importance there was, so far, no direct measurement beam...
The emergence of the citric acid cycle is one most remarkable occurrences with regard to understanding origin and evolution metabolic pathways. Although chemical steps are preserved intact throughout nature, diverse organisms make wide use its chemistry, in some cases only a selected portion cycle. However, origins this would have arisen more primitive anaerobic organism or even back proto-metabolism, which likely arose spontaneously under favorable prebiotic conditions. In context, we...
The Exoplanet Characterisation Observatory (EChO) mission was one of the proposed candidates for European Space Agency’s third medium within Cosmic Vision Framework. EChO designed to observe spectra from transiting exo-planets in 0.55–11 micron band with a goal covering 0.4 16 micron. and its associated scientific instrument has undergone rigorous technical evaluation phase. This paper provides an overview payload design mission, showing how system acts together fulfill objectives. We report...
Diamond has been identified as a very promising material for X and ultraviolet sensing. In this Letter, photoconductive device based on freestanding homoepitaxial chemically vapor deposition (CVD) single-crystal diamond 500μm thick tested. Photoconductive measurements in coplanar transverse configurations have performed to characterize the sensitivity 140–250 nm spectral range. Very high values were achieved both configurations. The configuration is at least 300 times higher than configuration.
Peak current represents a key demand for new generation electron beam photoinjectors. Many applications, such as free laser, inverse Compton scattering, terahertz radiation generation, have efficiencies strongly dependent on the bunch length and current. A method of longitudinal compression (called velocity bunching) has been proposed some years ago, based phase space rotation in rf field potential. The control can lead to factor excess 10, depending initial emittance. Code simulations shown...
