Marburg hemorrhagic fever was detected among 4 miners in Ibanda District, Uganda, from June through September, 2007. Infection likely acquired exposure to bats or bat secretions a mine Kamwenge and possibly human-to-human transmission between some patients. We describe the epidemiologic investigation health education response.
In summer 2012, an outbreak of hantavirus infections occurred among overnight visitors to Yosemite National Park in California, USA. An investigation encompassing clinical, epidemiologic, laboratory, and environmental factors identified 10 cases residents 3 states. Eight case-patients experienced pulmonary syndrome, whom 5 required intensive care with ventilatory support died. Staying a signature tent cabin (9 case-patients) was significantly associated becoming infected (p<0.001). Rodent...
We report a case of Lassa fever in US traveler who visited rural Liberia, became ill while country, sought medical care upon return to the United States, and subsequently had his illness laboratory confirmed. The patient recovered with supportive therapy. No secondary cases occurred.
We investigated the extent of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV) infection in employees and rodents at 3 commercial breeding facilities. Of 97 tested, 31 (32%) had IgM and/or IgG to LCMV, aseptic meningitis was diagnosed 4 employees. 1,820 tested 1 facility, 382 (21%) mice (Mus musculus) detectable IgG, 13 (0.7%) were positive by reverse transcription PCR; LCMV isolated from 8. Rats (Rattus norvegicus) not found be infected. S-segment RNA sequence similar strains previously North...
BackgroundDuring an emergency response, communication is often the first activity as responders mobilize (1).During 2014-2016 Ebola virus disease (Ebola) epidemic in West Africa, CDC's response focused on two fronts, epicenter Africa and at home United States.Media coverage public opinion drove demand for information States, whereas need life-saving was crucial.

In December 2016, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (WDHS) notified CDC a patient hospitalized with fever, leukopenia, elevated transaminases, and proteinuria. The owned operated an in-home rattery, or rat-breeding facility, approximately 100 Norway rats, primarily bred as pets. A family member developed similar symptoms 4 weeks later, but was not hospitalized. Because both patients were known to have rodent contact, they tested for hantavirus infections. January 2017, confirmed...
Abstract Background During 2017, a multistate outbreak investigation occurred after the confirmation of Seoul virus (SEOV) infections in people and pet rats. A total 147 humans 897 rats were tested. Methods In addition to immunoglobulin (Ig)G IgM serology traditional reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), novel quantitative RT-PCR primers/probe developed, whole genome sequencing was performed. Results Seventeen had SEOV IgM, indicating recent infection; 7 reported symptoms...
Rift Valley Fever virus (RVF) is a zoonotic in the Phenuiviridae family. RVF outbreaks can cause significant morbidity and mortality humans animals. Following diagnosis of two cases March 2016 southern Kabale district, Uganda, we conducted knowledge, attitudes practice (KAP) survey to identify knowledge gaps at-risk behaviors related RVF.A multidisciplinary team interviewed 657 community members, including abattoir workers, around District, Uganda. Most participants (90%) had most (77%)...
To evaluate changes in Ebola-related knowledge, attitudes and prevention practices during the Sierra Leone outbreak between 2014 2015.Four cluster surveys were conducted: two before peak (3499 participants) after (7104 participants). We assessed effect of temporal geographical factors on 16 attitude practice outcomes.Fourteen outcomes improved across all regions from to peak. The proportion respondents willing to: (i) welcome Ebola survivors back into community increased 60.0% 89.4%...
We report a fatal case of Lassa fever diagnosed in the United States Liberian traveler. describe infection control protocols and public health response. One contact at high risk became symptomatic, but her samples tested negative for virus; no secondary cases occurred among care, family, community contacts.
During follow-up of a 2012 US outbreak lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus (LCMV), we conducted trace-forward investigation. LCMV-infected feeder mice originating from rodent breeding facility had been distributed to >500 locations in 21 states. All the were euthanized, and no additional persons tested positive for LCMV infection.
