アカマツ (Pinus densiflora Sieb.et Zucc.) 苗木の針葉のガス交換とクロロフィル蛍光特性の日内変化を野外条件下で追跡し, 光合成の日中低下の機構について検討を行った。苗木の頂部に展開した当年葉を対象に, ガス交換とクロロフィル蛍光を測定した。好陽的・耐乾性的な特性を持つと予想されるアカマツにおいても, 夏の晴天日における真昼の強光と温度上昇に対する光合成の日中低下が見られた。この光合成の日中低下には, 気孔コンダクタンスおよび光化学系IIを介しての量子収率 (Delta;F/Fm') と電子伝達速度 (ETR) の低下が伴っていた。測定は充分な土壌水分下の苗木を対象に行われたため, 植物体の水分不足ではなく, 1) 葉温や水蒸気圧欠差の上昇に伴う気孔の閉鎖反応と, 2) 強光下での光化学系の活性低下が, 光合成の日中低下の複合的な原因と考えられた。このとき, 非光化学的な光エネルギー放散 (NPQ) が増大しており, 過剰な光エネルギーの発生を散逸する機構が働いていることが示唆された。
