Israel was certified as polio-free country in June 2002, along with the rest of World Health Organization European Region. Some 11 years later, wild-type polio virus ₁ (WPV₁) isolated initially from routine sewage samples collected between 7 and 13 April 2013 two cities Southern district. WPV₁-specific analysis indicated WPV₁ introduction into that area early February 2013. National supplementary immunisation oral vaccine has been ongoing since August

An emergency response was triggered by recovery of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) the South Asia (SOAS) lineage from sewage in southern Israel April 2013 during routine environmental surveillance. Public health risk assessment necessitated intensification surveillance order to facilitate countrywide monitoring WPV1-SOAS circulation. This involved increasing sampling frequency and broadening geographical area, for better coverage population at risk, as well modifying testing algorithms...

A major obstacle to eradicating polio is that poliovirus from endemic countries can be reintroduced polio-free countries. Environmental surveillance (ES) detect sewage or wastewaters samples, even in the absence of patients with paralysis. ES underused, part because its sensitivity unknown. We used two unique data sets collected during a natural experiment provided by 2013 outbreak Israel: different locations and records supplemental immunization live vaccine. Data intersecting population...

Israel has been certified as polio-free by the World Health Organization and its routine immunisation schedule consists of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) only. At end May 2013, Israeli Ministry (MOH) confirmed reintroduction wild-type 1 into country. Documented ongoing human-to-human transmission necessitated a thorough risk assessment followed supplemental campaign using oral polio (OPV). Israel has >95% polio vaccine coverage with the last 9 birth cohorts immunized exclusively inactivated (IPV). Using acute flaccid paralysis and routine, monthly countrywide environmental surveillance, no wild poliovirus circulation was detected between 1989 February 2013, after which type 1 polioviruses South Asia genotype (WPV1-SOAS) have persistently circulated in southern intermittently other areas without any paralytic cases as determined by intensified surveillance of human samples. This report describes an unusual surge of West Nile fever in Israel June 2024, during which 125 cases were diagnosed, compared with 4 on average previous years (2014–23). Of the cases, 64 (62.1%) had neuroinvasive disease and 12 (9.6%) died; 2024 case fatality rate was not significantly elevated vs 2014–23. The early rise could be related to a temperature increase spring summer 2024.
