HIV infection has now been consistently identified as the major cause of death in young Africans both urban and rural areas. In Africa, several studies have defined clinical presentation disease but there only a limited number autopsy studies. Because scarcity data possibility differing type frequency opportunistic infections between different geographic locations we set out to study consecutive new adult medical admissions tertiary referral hospital Nairobi perform autopsies on sample...

Ten Kenyan patients with visceral leishmaniasis unresponsive to sodium stibogluconate, at a dose of 16 20 mg Sb/kg body-weight/day given for 30 98 days, were treated bw every eight hours. This regimen was modified or abandoned in six because suspected toxicity, although toxicity difficult assess intercurrent illness. Toxic effects included lethargy, anorexia, vomiting, electrocardiographic changes, fall haemoglobin and rise liver enzymes. One patient died, probably from cardiac arrhythmia....

Abstract The morphology and molecular study of the penguin brain are crucial to define its survival in extreme conditions Antarctica. present focusses on extracting different optical parameters using label-free imaging spectroscopic techniques. In imaging, we have used quantitative phase which provides morphological information about neurons tissue, giving value 5 20 radians corresponding 8 µm tissue section. techniques, autofluorescence Raman spectroscopy. Summary Our aim was to identify the factors that influence care‐seeking behaviour of chest symptomatics in urban and rural areas South India. We conducted in‐depth interviews with 649 participants: 80% 310 residents 63% 339 people had sought care ( P < 0.01), 93% within 1 month onset symptoms. Private health facilities were first preferred point contact for 57% 48% participants; major reasons proximity residence their perception good‐quality would be available there. Symptomatics who did...
Ten Kenyan patients with visceral leishmaniasis, unresponsive to sodium stibogluconate at a dose of 16 20 mg Sb/kg/day given for 30 98 days, have been studied clinically and immunologically compared 57 antimony-responsive patients. Pulmonary tuberculosis previous treatment antimonial drugs were the only factors which more common in The degree immunosuppression rate recovery immunoreactivity did not differ between -unresponsive Only one patient had never treated before (primary...
The development of hearing loss and concomitant cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytochemical changes in a model pneumococcal meningitis were examined. Rabbits injected intracisternally with 10(5) pneumococci. Auditory evoked potentials to clicks 10- 1-kHz tone bursts recorded hourly; CSF was analyzed every 4 h. Sensorineural developed all animals beginning 12 h after infection progressed severe deafness. onset preceded by leukocytosis > 2000 cells/microL elevation protein lactate concentrations or...
Multispectral quantitative phase imaging (MS-QPI) is a high-contrast label-free technique for morphological of the specimens. The aim present study to extract spectral dependent information in single-shot using highly spatially sensitive digital holographic microscope assisted by deep neural network. There are three different wavelengths used our method: λ=532, 633, and 808 nm. first step get interferometric data each wavelength. acquired datasets train generative adversarial network...
Background: Disseminated infection with Histoplasma capsulatum and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in patients AIDS are frequently difficult to distinguish clinically. Methods: We retrospectively compared demographic information, other opportunistic infections, medications, symptoms, physical examination findings laboratory parameters at the time of hospital presentation for 32 culture documented disseminated histoplasmosis 58 MAC infection. Results: Positive predictors histoplasma by...
The range of clinical presentations HIV-related disease in Africa has not been adequately described, despite the fact that many hospitals have to rely heavily on diagnosis. Six hundred adult medical patients seen Casualty Department main Government hospital Nairobi were enrolled a study presentation and outcome disease: 506 these admitted, whom 19 per cent (95) HIV seropositive. remaining 94 dealt with as outpatients: 11 percent (10) A history prior treatment for sexually transmitted and, if...
Quantitative phase microscopy (QPM) is a label-free technique that enables to monitor morphological changes at subcellular level. The performance of the QPM system in terms spatial sensitivity and resolution depends on coherence properties light source numerical aperture (NA) objective lenses. Here, we propose high space-bandwidth using partially spatially coherent optical (PSC-OCM) assisted with deep neural network. PSC synthesized improve reconstructed map from interferometric images....
The survival rate of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) patients is very poor, but it can be improved using highly sensitive, specific, and accurate techniques. Autofluorescence fluorescence techniques are sensitive helpful in cancer screening; being directly linked with the molecular levels human tissue, they used as a quantitative tool for detection. Here, we report development multi-modal autofluorescence imaging spectroscopic (MAF-IS) smartphone-based systems fast real-time screening....

Background: Social support plays a crucial role for patients with aggressive hematologic malignancies as they navigate their illness course. The aim of this study was to examine associations social overall survival (OS) and healthcare utilization in population. Methods: A cross-sectional secondary analysis conducted using data from prospective longitudinal cohort 251 hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital 2014 through 2017. Natural Language Processing (NLP) used identify the extent...
Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC), a chronic inflammatory disease of gastrointestinal tract, can have initial presentation which is clinically difficult to differentiate from functional bowel disorders [irritable syndrome (IBS) and irritable (IBD)].Conventional laboratory tests, such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein, albumin express systemic patient responses instead intestinal inflammation. In the last decade, fecal calprotectin, calcium-binding has been...
Abstract White light phase‐shifting interference microscopy (WL‐PSIM) is a prominent technique for high‐resolution quantitative phase imaging (QPI) of industrial and biological specimens. However, multiple interferograms with accurate phase‐shifts are essentially required in WL‐PSIM measuring the object. Here, we present single‐shot interferometric techniques measurement using filtered white (520±36 nm) (F‐WL‐PSIM) deep neural network (DNN). The methods incorporated by training DNN to...
Quantitative phase measurements in a Transport of intensity equation(TIE) based method requires capturing images at multiple defocussed positions. Using these along with the obtained we demonstrate an optimization algorithm that improves quantitative estimation recovering fine details may be lost due to diffraction effects, aberrations and limitations TIE method. We implement cost minimization scheme minimize difference between measured theoretically expected amplitude improve estimate...
Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) is a potentially curative therapy for hematologic malignancies, but it often results in significant toxicities and impaired quality of life (QOL). Although the value patient-reported outcomes (PROs) increasingly recognized HCT, data are limited regarding relationship between PROs HCT complications. We conducted secondary analysis 250 patients who were hospitalized autologous or allogeneic at Massachusetts General Hospital from 2011 through 2016....
