The most frequently used diagnostic methods were compared in a longitudinal survey with Leishmania infantum-infected asymptomatic dogs from an area of Italy where leishmaniasis is endemic. In February and March 2005, 845 tested by immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT), dipstick assay (DS), enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) for L. infantum IFAT Ehrlichia canis. Dogs seronegative further parasitologically evaluated microscopic examination lymph node tissues PCR skin samples. A total 204...
Abstract In large breed dogs, dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the main cause of congestive heart failure (CHF) and sudden cardiac death. The underlying etiology DCM usually not definitively identified; however, in predisposed breeds a hereditary often suspected. Other etiologies, such as toxins infections, have also been documented or suspected to dogs. Conventional drug treatment cannot reverse disease progression but can only control signs they occur. Cytoprotective gene therapy with...
The increasing number of reports human infections by Strongyloides stercoralis from a range European countries over the last 20 years has spurred interest scientific community towards this parasite and, in particular, role that canine hosts may play epidemiology disease. Data on strongyloidiasis is currently limited, most likely because inherent limitations current diagnostic methods.Faecal samples were collected directly rectal ampulla 272 animals varying age and both genders living Apulia,...
Angiostrongylosis was diagnosed in a dog presenting with haemothorax on the basis of detection Angiostrongylus vasorum first-stage larvae both pleural effusion and faeces. A one-year-old, male, mixed-breed presented fever, depression persistent cough one month's duration. Clinical examination revealed temperature 39.5 degrees C, loud bronchovesicular sounds thoracic auscultation attenuated cardiac sounds. Thoracic radiographs showed moderate bilateral diffuse interstitial pulmonary pattern,...
ABSTRACT An rK39 immunochromatographic test and immunofluorescent-antibody (IFAT) for serodiagnosis of canine leishmaniasis were evaluated. The two tests showed correlation all but one the sera obtained from 68 dogs confirmed as cases 40 (22 healthy 18 with other diseases) areas where disease is not endemic. Specificity was 100% both tests, while sensitivity 97% rapid 99% IFAT.
SUMMARY The aim of this study was to evaluate cytokine expression in 22 Leishmania infantum naturally infected dogs, order correlate parameter with the clinical status animals. After 4 and 8 months from first diagnosis infection, laboratory examination dogs performed peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated. profile analysed terms IFN-gamma, IL-4, IL-10 TNF-alpha mRNA cultured PBMC by a semi-quantitative reverse transcriptase-PCR. Thirteen out -infected remained asymptomatic...
Antimoniate therapy, in association with allopurinol, is one of the first-line treatments canine leishmaniasis (CanL). This study evaluates potential adverse effects associated aNm treatment CanL through both a retrospective analysis and long-term prospective also aimed to investigate its efficacy. The reviewed records 87 dogs at least follow-up available during or end therapy (Glucantime
Strongyloidiosis by Strongyloides stercoralis is a disease of increasing interest in human and animal medicine. The scientific knowledge on canine strongyloidiosis hindered the poor diagnostics available. To assess most sensitive specific diagnostic method, feces blood from 100 shelter dogs were screened for S. coprological, molecular serological tests. Thirty-six (36%) scored positive to coprology (22.3% Baermann) and/or 30% real time-polymerase chain reaction (rt-PCR). According two...
Canine leishmaniasis (CanL), caused by Leishmania infantum, is widely distributed in many Mediterranean countries and considered endemic southern central Italy with prevalence reaching up to 48.4%. Determination of the incidence would be useful as a measure risk infection, then evaluate usefulness control measures estimate whether new focus autochthonous or imported. This study was performed on two sites Apulia region Italy, namely A B. total 262 dogs were included evaluation incidence, 94...
A survey based on clinical, pathological and microbiological investigations was performed 11 Brown Swiss cattle affected with depression, anorexia, agalaxia, ruminal hypomotility, abdominal pain melaena. In eight animals, macroscopical lesions consisted in haemorrhagic enteritis the small intestine. Seven of isolates from tissue samples were identified as Clostridum perfringens type A, four C. beta2 toxin gene. Based these observations, animals considered bowel syndrome.
The effect of Leishmania infantum soluble antigen (LSA) and recombinant Kinetoplastid Membrane Protein 11 (rKMP11) on the induction ex vivo specific IFN-γ (n = 69) antibody responses 108) was determined in dogs. All dogs were tested for serological response to both antigens divided into Group 1: healthy (Asturias, Spain, n 26), 2: sick 46), 3: Ibizan hounds (Mallorca, 22) 4: (Bari, Italy, 14). Antibody levels higher LSA when compared rKMP11 (p 0.001). all seronegative 18% low seropositive...
The spread of human leishmaniasis has prompted the scientific community to study dogs as reservoirs for Leishmania infantum. Canine (CanL) is widespread in Mediterranean area with a prevalence up 50%. first step toward controlling disease monitor its distribution, mainly stray dogs. validity recombinant K39 (rK39) dipstick test, commercially available serodiagnosis leishmaniasis, was evaluated using sera from 165 selected on basis positive or negative lymph node smears at parasitological...
