Abstract Glacier runoff and melt from volcanic geothermal activity accumulates in glacier dammed lakes glaciated areas around the world. These eventually drain, creating hazardous subglacial floods that are usually only confirmed after they exit reach local river systems, which can be many tens of kilometres flood source. Once travel rapidly to populated areas. Such delayed detection represents a potentially lethal shortcoming early-warning. Here we demonstrate how advance early-warning...

ABSTRACT Discharge and water temperature measurements in the Skaftá river of lowering ice over subglacial lake at western cauldron, Vatnajökull, Iceland, were made during a rapidly rising glacial outburst flood (jökulhlaup) September 2006. Outflow from lake, discharge glacier terminus transient volume floodwater jökulhlaup are derived these data. The 40 km long initial path was mainly formed by lifting deformation overlying ice, induced pressure excess overburden pressure. Melting due to...

ABSTRACT GPS campaigns on glaciers during jökulhlaups show how subglacial floods affect glacier motion and shed light the dynamics of such floods. Three have been carried out southern western Vatnajökull, southeast Iceland, over known jökulhlaup paths. Two slowly rising from Grímsvötn two rapidly eastern Skaftá cauldrons were captured in these campaigns, with maximum discharge ranging 240 to 3300 m 3 s −1 . Glacier surface movements measured are presented along corresponding curves. The...

Abstract Glacial floods (jökulhlaups) are a phenomenon of some temperate ice masses; they significant natural hazard, but their complex hydrology is incompletely understood. We document jökulhlaup from subglacial lake in Iceland that was inadvertently triggered by borehole drilled through the overlying ice. propose this allowed an englacial water body to drain into lake, inducing transient rise pressure overwhelmed lake's seal 5 days later. Runaway melting conduit 4°C then initiated flood...

Estimations of bedrock topography below glaciers and ice thickness are vital for quantifying freshwater availability surrounding populations understanding the contribution melting to sea-level rise in context global warming. While active seismology is commonly used estimation, utilization passive methods remains relatively rare. Passive solutions offer cost-effectiveness, non-invasiveness continuous monitoring capabilities that present valuable benefits glaciological research. Over past two...

We present a study on two jökulhlaups from the subglacial lake Grímsvötn, beneath Vatnajökull ice cap, SE-Iceland, giving new insights into development of slowly rising jökulhlaups. In first, spanning period 14 November – 10 December, 2021, ~0.92 km3 water was released, reaching peak discharge ~3500 m3 s–1 4 December. latter, taking place 4–22 October, 2022, corresponding numbers were ~0.16 and ~500...

The Skaftár cauldrons are a pair of depressions at the surface Vatnajökull glacier that signify subglacial lakes caused by geothermal heat sources underlying bedrock. These continuously grow in volume and produce fast-rising jökulhlaups (glacial lake outburst floods) outlet 35-40 km away. Seismic tremor events coincide with these large floods, but exact source this is unknown. To investigate origin characteristics tremors, network covariance matrix spectral width,...
