ガングリオシドなどの細胞表面の構成成分がフィブロネクチンをふくむ細胞外環境中のいくつかの生体活性物質を認識できる事実により、昔から接着過程に高級ガングリオシドが関与すると考えられていた。つまり、初期の研究では高級ガングリオシドがフィブロネクチンの受容体として機能している可能性が調べられた。しかし、ガングリオシドのフィブロネクチン受容体としての役割が納得いくまで立証されたことはなかった。さらに、インテグリンがマトリックス接着性タンパク質の細胞表在性糖タンパク質受容体であることが分かり、細胞接着におけるガングリオシドの役割は不確かなものとなった。その後、接着部位の分子構築の、言い換えれば細胞の組織培養基質への接着を仲介する構造の、観察からそこに高級ガングリオシドが優先的に分配されていることが分かった。さらに、接着部位でインテグリン受容体と高級ガングリオシドが一緒に存在していることも分かった。これらの発見により、高級ガングリオシドが細胞接着に関与している可能性を再び髣髴させ、高級ガングリオシドとインテグリンのような細胞接着に関与する構成成分間での相互作用に焦点が定められた。実際、細胞外...
