Optical biosensors based on localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) are the future of label-free detection methods. This work reports development plasmonic thin films, containing Au nanoparticles dispersed in a TiO2 matrix, as platforms for LSPR biosensors. Post-deposition treatments were employed, namely annealing at 400 °C, to develop an band, and Ar plasma, improve sensitivity Au-TiO2 film. Streptavidin biotin conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) chosen model receptor-analyte,...

Candida albicans is the main causative agent of candidiasis and one most frequent causes nosocomial infections worldwide. In order to establish an infection, this pathogen supports effective stress responses counter host defenses adapts changes in availability important nutrients, such as alternative carbon sources. These have clear implications on composition structure cell wall. Therefore, we studied impact lactate, a physiologically relevant source, activity C. RLM1 transcriptional...

Opportunistic fungi cause lethal systemic infections and impose high medical costs to health systems. The World Health Organization has recognized the importance of fungal infections, including them in its global priority list guiding research, development, discovery new therapeutic approaches. Fungal vaccine development been proposed as one treatment prevention strategies last decade. In this study, we present design a lipid antigen delivery system based on Dioctadecyldimethylammonium...

There is an increasing need for novel drugs and new strategies the therapy of invasive candidiasis. This study aimed to develop characterize liposome-based nanoparticles carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, citral, thymol with anti-Candida activities. Dioctadecyldimethylammonium bromide- monoolein-based liposomes in a 1:2 molar ratio were prepared using lipid-film hydration method. Liposomes assembled equal volumes liposomal stock dispersion solutions or dimethyl sulfoxide. Cytotoxicity was tested on...

The deposition of zinc–zinc oxide nanoparticles (Zn–ZnO NPs) onto porous Ta2O5 surfaces enriched with calcium phosphate by DC magnetron sputtering was investigated to improve the surface antimicrobial activity without triggering an inflammatory response. Different sizes and amounts Zn NPs obtained two optimized different depositions additional thin carbon (C) layer deposited over were explored. C mitigates porosity, increasing hydrophobicity decreasing roughness. possible effect immune...

Abstract Chitinases are widely studied enzymes that have already found widespread application. Their continued development and valorisation will be driven by the identification of new improved variants and/or novel applications bringing benefits to industry society. We previously identified a application for chitinases wherein Candida albicans cell wall surface chitinase 3 (Cht3) was shown potential in vaccine as subunit antigen against fungal infections. In present study, this enzyme...

FAO estimates that in 2030 the poultry meat production could reach 120 million tons, which is a challenge terms of waste management. Feathers are mainly composed keratin, an important biomaterial. Using feathers as source keratin will minimize generated, while contributing to supply material for several industries, such pharmaceutical and biomedical. The peptides were extracted from by microbial degradation. In this study, we evaluated effect on keratinocyte metabolic activity migration....

The rise in non-albicans Candida species, exhibiting unpredictable antifungal resistance, complicates treatment and contributes to the growing threat of invasive, life-threatening infections. This study evaluates activity four benzo[a]phenoxazine derivatives (C34, C35, A42, A44) against 14 strains following EUCAST standards. Fluconazole interactions are analysed through fractional inhibitory concentration index (FICI) calculation response surface analysis based on Bliss model....

Previous studies have correlated the severity of recurrent vulvovaginal Candida infections (VVC) and balanitis in patients from China with presence some dominant genotypes at ORF RLM1. Here we tested VVC vs non-VVC isolates Portugal, Brazil Greece and, although same were identified isolates, they present only five out 150 strains. However, this analysis showed that presented a higher percentage similar high molecular weight alleles, comparison strains isolated other biological sources.
