We give a classical confidence belt construction which unifies the treatment of upper limits for null results and two-sided intervals non-null results. The unified solves problem (apparently not previously recognized) that choice limit or leads to are if is based on data. apply two related problems have recently been battleground between Bayesian statistics: Poisson processes with background Gaussian errors bounded physical region. In contrast usual limits, our avoids unphysical intervals....

This biennial Review summarizes much of Particle Physics. Using data from previous editions, plus 2205 new measurements 667 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties gauge bosons, leptons, quarks, mesons, baryons. We also summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as Higgs heavy neutrinos, supersymmetric particles. All the particle search limits are listed in Summary Tables. give numerous tables, figures, formulae, reviews topics Standard Model, detectors,...

We have studied the muon neutrino and antineutrino quasi-elastic (QEL) scattering reactions (ν μ n→μ − p $\bar{\nu }_{\mu}p\to\mu^{+}n$ ) using a set of experimental data collected by NOMAD Collaboration. performed measurements cross-section these processes on nuclear target (mainly carbon) normalizing it to total ν ( $\bar{\nu}_{\mu}$ charged-current cross section. The results for flux-averaged QEL sections in (anti)neutrino energy interval 3–100 GeV are $\langle...

We present the results of a search for νμ→νe oscillations in NOMAD experiment at CERN. The looked appearance νe predominantly νμ wide-band neutrino beam CERN SPS. No evidence was found. 90% confidence limits obtained are Δm2<0.4 eV2 maximal mixing and sin2(2θ)<1.4×10−3 large Δm2. This result excludes LSND allowed region oscillation parameters with Δm2≳10 eV2.

The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for νμ − ντ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. ντ's are searched through their charged current interactions followed by observation of resulting τ− its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating use light target which enables reconstruction individual particles produced interactions. This paper describes various components detector: and muon drift chambers, electromagnetic...

Physicists embarking on seemingly routine error analyses are finding themselves grappling with major conceptual issues which have divided the statistics community for years. While philosophical aspects of debate may be endless, a practicing experimenter must choose way to report results. The results can depend two frameworks, classical or Bayesian, one adopts. This article reviews reasons why most data analysis in particle physics has traditionally been carried out within framework, and this...

NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for ντ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band νμ beam. Signal detection relies on identification of charged current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis 1995 data sample yields no signal. Combining all studied τ decay modes, limit sin22θμτ<4.2×10−3 obtained large Δm2 at 90% confidence level.

A question that comes up repeatedly is how to combine the results of two experiments if all known one experiment had a n-sigma effect and another m-sigma effect. This not well-posed: depending on what additional assumptions are made, preferred answer different. The note lists some more prominent papers topic, with brief comments excerpts.
