We compared 19,207 cases of SARS-CoV-2 variant B.1.1.7/S gene target failure (SGTF), 436 B.1.351 and 352 P.1 to non-variant reported by seven European countries. COVID-19 with these variants had significantly higher adjusted odds ratios for hospitalisation (B.1.1.7/SGTF: 1.7, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.0–2.9; B.1.351: 3.6, CI: 2.1–6.2; P.1: 2.6, 1.4–4.8) B.1.1.7/SGTF also intensive care admission 2.3, 1.4–3.5; 2.2, 1.7–2.8).
There is an urgent need to measure the impacts of COVID-19 among gay men and other who have sex with (MSM). We conducted a cross-sectional survey global sample MSM (n = 2732) from April 16, 2020 May 4, 2020, through social networking app. characterized economic, mental health, HIV prevention treatment response, examined whether sub-groups our study population are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19. Many not only reported economic health consequences, but also interruptions testing, care...
Migrants have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 and emerging evidence suggests they may face barriers to vaccination. Participatory approaches engagement strategies are urgently needed strengthen uptake, alongside innovative delivery mechanisms sharing of best practice, ensure migrants better consider within countries’ existing vaccine priority structures.
Migrants are considered a key group at risk for HIV infection. This study describes the epidemiology of and distribution late presentation among migrants within European Union/European Economic Area during 2007-2012.HIV cases reported to Surveillance System (TESSy) were analyzed. defined as people whose geographical origin was different than reporting country. Multiple logistic regression used model presentation.Overall, 156,817 reported, which 60,446 (38%) migrants. Of these, 53% from...
Abstract Introduction In recent years, HIV testing frequency has increased, resulting in more people being diagnosed during seroconversion with a temporarily low CD4 count. Using the current consensus definition of late presentation ('presenting for care count < 350 cells/μL or an AIDS‐defining event, regardless count') these individuals would be incorrectly assigned as late. Methods spring 2022, European expert group convened to revise definition. A survey on data availability apply this...
We assess monkeypox vaccination acceptance among male adults in the European Region. conducted an online survey through two dating apps targeting men who have sex with men, from 30 July to 12 August 2022. developed Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression models investigate acceptance. Overall crude was 82% and higher north-western compared south-eastern regions. Acceptance strongly rose perception of increased disease severity transmission risk, individuals linked healthcare.
Abstract Antiretroviral therapy (ART) started to become more widely available in Vietnam 2005. However, up now, very little is known about factors influencing ART adherence among people living with HIV (PLHIV) Vietnam. This qualitative study aimed describe PLHIV a northern province Vietnam, and explore possibilities of home delivery ART. Forty-eight participants (36 men 12 women), including patients on their relatives, were divided seven focus group discussions. The topics discussed...
Among people living with HIV (PLHIV) on antiretroviral therapy (ART), it is important to determine how quality of life (QOL) may be improved and HIV-related stigma can lessened over time. This study assessed the effect peer support QOL internal during first year after initiating ART among a cohort PLHIV in north-eastern Vietnam. A sub-sample randomised controlled trial was implemented between October 2008 November 2010 Quang Ninh, In intervention group, participants (n = 119) received...
In 2019, only 14 European and Central Asian countries provided reimbursed HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Using EMIS-2017 data, we present the difference between self-reported use expressed need for PrEP in individual Union (EU). We estimate that 500,000 men who have sex with EU cannot access PrEP, although they would be very likely to it. PrEP's potential eliminate is currently unrealised by national healthcare systems.
Aims To (i) describe an intervention implemented in response to the HIV-1 outbreak among people who inject drugs (PWIDs) Greece (ARISTOTLE programme), (ii) assess its success identifying and testing this population (iii) socio-demographic characteristics, risk behaviours access treatment/prevention, estimate HIV prevalence identify factors, as assessed at first participation of PWIDs. Design A 'seek, test, treat, retain' employing five rounds respondent-driven sampling. Setting Athens,...
In the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA), migrants from high-endemic countries are disproportionately affected by HIV. Between 2007 and 2012, represented 39 % of reported HIV cases. There is growing evidence that a significant proportion acquisition among migrant populations occurs after their arrival in Europe. Migrants confronted with multiple risk factors shape patterns population susceptibility vulnerability, which simultaneously affect transmission. Undocumented incur...
We estimated risks of severe outcomes in 820,404 symptomatic paediatric COVID-19 cases reported by 10 European Union countries between August 2020 and October 2021. Case hospitalisation rates rose as transmission increased but were rare: 9,611 (1.2%) hospitalised, 640 (0.08%) required intensive care 84 (0.01%) died. Despite individual risk (adjusted odds ratio hospitalisation: 7.3; 95% confidence interval: 3.3–16.2; care: 8.7; 6.2–12.3) with comorbidities, most (83.7%) hospitalised children...
Objectives. We examined HIV prevalence and risk factors among injection drug users (IDUs) in Athens, Greece, during an outbreak. Methods. used respondent-driven sampling (RDS) to recruit 1404 IDUs the Aristotle intervention August October 2012. interviewed participants tested for HIV. performed bivariate multivariate analyses. Results. Estimated was 19.8% (RDS-weighted = 14.8%). Odds of infection were 2.3 times as high homeless housed 2.1 who injected at least once per day less frequent...
A "seek-test-treat" intervention (ARISTOTLE) was implemented in response to an outbreak of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among persons who inject drugs (PWID) Athens. We assess trends HIV incidence, prevalence, risk behaviors and access prevention/treatment. Methods included behavioral data collection, provision injection equipment, testing, linkage opioid substitution treatment (OST) programs care during 5 rounds respondent-driven sampling (2012–2013). incidence estimated...
Infectious diseases can constitute public health emergencies of international concern when a pathogen arises, acquires new characteristics, or is deliberately released, leading to the potential for loss human lives as well societal disruption. A wide range risk drivers are now known lead and/or exacerbate emergence and spread infectious disease, including global trade travel, overuse antibiotics, intensive agriculture, climate change, high population densities, inadequate infrastructures,...
The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) has set a “90-90-90” target to curb the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) epidemic by 2020, but methods used assess whether countries have reached this are not standardized, hindering comparisons. Through collaboration formed European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) with HIV cohorts surveillance agencies, we constructed 4-stage continuum of care 11 Union 2013. Stages were defined as (1) number people living in country...

Greece and Romania reported an increased number of HIV cases among injecting drug users (IDUs) during 2011. Most European countries no changes in the rate newly diagnosed or prevalence IDUs; however, six did report increases several additional risk indicators low coverage prevention services. These indicate a potential for transmission future outbreaks unless adequate is implemented.
