The cumulative incidence of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases is showing similar trends in European Union/European Economic Area countries and the United Kingdom confirming that, while at a different stage depending on country, COVID-19 pandemic progressing rapidly all countries. Based experience from Italy, countries, hospitals intensive care units should increase their preparedness for surge patients with who will require healthcare, particular care.
BackgroundTick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a vaccine-preventable disease involving the central nervous system. TBE became notifiable on EU/EEA level in 2012.AimWe aimed to provide an updated epidemiological assessment of EU/EEA, focusing spatiotemporal changes.MethodsWe performed descriptive analysis case characteristics, time and location using data human cases reported by countries European Centre for Disease Prevention Control with onset 2012-2020. We analysed at national, subnational...
Invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) is a major cause of bacterial meningitis and septicaemia although infection by some serogroups may be prevented through vaccination. We aimed to describe the epidemiology IMD in EU/EEA countries during 2004-2014 monitor serogroup- age-specific trends, compare country trends period C conjugate (MCC) vaccine introduction. We analysed surveillance data age, gender, serogroup, outcome. estimated percentage change annual notification rate (NR), using linear...
We describe the epidemiology of invasive Haemophilus influenzae disease during 2007-2014 in 12 European countries and assess overall H. trends by serotype patient age. Mean annual notification rate was 0.6 cases/100,000 population, with an increasing trend 3.3% (95% CI 2.3% to 4.3%). The highest for patients <1 month age (23.4 population). Nontypeable (NTHi) caused 78% all cases showed among persons >20 years Serotype f >60 b decreasing 1-5 months, 1-4 years, >40 Sustained success routine...
Gonorrhoea cases increased steeply in women aged 20 to 24 years across 15 EU/EEA countries July December 2022 and January June 2023 with, respectively, 73% 89% more reported than expected, based on historical data from 2015 2019. Smaller increases among men due heterosexual transmission were observed nine countries. Interventions raise awareness young people about sexually transmitted infection risks are needed, emphasising the benefit of safe sexual practices testing.
Epidemiological investigations of outbreaks hepatitis A virus (HAV) and norovirus (NoV) infections in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) last five years have highlighted frozen berries as a vehicle infection. Given increasing berry consumption EU over decades, we undertook review existing evidence to assess potential scale threat associated with this product. We searched literature four restricted-access online platforms for outbreak/contamination events berries. performed an...
The aims of this study were to increase the diagnostic accuracy analysis synovial fluid in differentiation prosthetic joint infection (PJI) by addition inexpensive biomarkers such as levels C-reactive protein (CRP), adenosine deaminase (ADA), alpha-2-macrogloblulin (α2M) and procalcitonin.Between January 2013 December 2015, removed implants requested from 143 revision total arthroplasties. A 55 patients met inclusion criteria receipt sufficient fluid, tissue samples for analysis. diagnosis...
This article presents and compares coronavirus disease 2019 attack rates for infection, hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission death in healthcare workers (HCWs) non-HCWs nine European countries from 31st January 2020 to 13th 2021. Adjusted rate ratios HCWs (compared with non-HCWs) were 3.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.2-4.0] 1.8 (95% CI 1.2-2.7) 1.9 1.1-3.2) ICU 0.9 0.4-2.0) death. Among hospitalized cases, the case-fatality ratio was 1.8% 8.2% non-HCWs. Differences may be...
BackgroundDengue is a disease with major impacts on public health in tropical and subtropical countries. In Europe, the past decade, few autochthonous outbreaks were described.AimWe aimed to identify factors associated frequency of dengue virus infection among European travellers at assessing how surveillance data could support preparedness against within Europe.MethodsWe performed descriptive analysis travel-related cases reported by countries from 2015 through 2019. Using flight passenger...
We studied the possible association between patient age and sex, clinical presentation, Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype, antimicrobial resistance, death in invasive pneumococcal disease cases reported by 17 European countries during 2010. The study sample comprised 2,921 patients, of whom 56.8% were men 38.2% >65 years age. Meningitis occurred 18.5% cases. Death was 264 (9.0%) Older age, meningitis, nonsusceptibility to penicillin significantly associated with death. Non-pneumococcal...
As tuberculosis (TB) in children is an indicator of ongoing transmission, we analysed surveillance data to understand the increase notified TB cases among individuals aged < 15 years European Union/European Economic Area countries between 2015 and 2023. Several factors may have contributed this increase, such as improved diagnosis reporting, migration COVID-19 pandemic. The observed increasing trend, albeit low absolute numbers, emphasises importance early case finding timely prevention.
Background Campylobacteriosis is the most commonly reported food-borne infection in European Union, with an annual number of cases estimated at around 9 million. In many countries, campylobacteriosis has a striking seasonal peak during early/mid-summer. early 2000s, several publications on seasonality across Europe and associations temperature precipitation. Subsequently, countries have introduced new measures against this disease. Aim To examine how varied from 2008–16, to explore...
BackgroundThe burden of Legionnaires' disease (LD) in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) has increased during last decade, with notification rates increasing from 1.2 to 1.4/100,000 population 2012-16, 1.8-2.2 within 2017-19.AimTo measure weekly excess cases 2017-19 based on previous trends and determine whether a significant change trend occurred, examine any differences age, sex or level imported infections.MethodsWe collated 2012-19 annual surveillance data The...
Abstract Background Morbidity, severity, and mortality associated with annual influenza epidemics are of public health concern. We analyzed surveillance data on hospitalized laboratory-confirmed cases admitted to intensive care units identify common determinants for fatal outcome inform target prevention strategies, including risk communication. Methods performed a descriptive analysis used Poisson regression models robust variance estimate the association age, sex, virus (sub)type,...
BackgroundTimely treatment with neuraminidase inhibitors (NAI) can reduce severe outcomes in influenza patients.AimWe assessed the impact of antiviral on in-hospital deaths laboratory-confirmed patients 11 European Union countries from 2010/11 to 2019/20.MethodsCase-based surveillance data hospitalised known age, sex, outcome, ward, vaccination status, timing treatment, and hospitalisation were obtained. A mixed effect logistic regression model using country as random intercept was applied...
Abstract Autochthonous outbreaks of chikungunya have occurred in the European Union (EU) after virus introduction by infected travelers. We reviewed surveillance data travel-related cases reported EU during 2012–2018 to document factors associated with increased infection rates among travelers and assess how could support preparedness against secondary transmission timely control outbreaks. Thirteen countries 2,616 cases. observed 3 successive epidemiologic periods; highest number (75%)...
Since 2008, veterinary authorities in Greece have implemented national control programmes (NSCPs) targeting S. Enteritidis (SE) and Typhimurium (ST) poultry. We assessed the effect of programs on reported number human isolates. Using monthly data for 2006–2017, we defined two groups (SE, ST) one group with serotypes unrelated to poultry or eggs. For SE also analysed 2006–2015 due a multi-county outbreak 2016. performed an interrupted time series analysis used negative binominal regression...
Background Underlying conditions are risk factors for severe COVID-19 outcomes but evidence is limited about how risks differ with age. Aim We sought to estimate age-specific associations between underlying and hospitalisation, death in-hospital among cases. Methods analysed case-based data submitted The European Surveillance System 2 June 13 December 2020 by nine countries. Eleven cases only one condition the number of multimorbid were used as exposures. Adjusted odds ratios (aOR) estimated...
Abstract We assessed the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers (HCWs) from data 2.9 million cases reported nine countries in EU/EEA. Compared to non-HCWs, HCWs had a higher adjusted risk hospitalization (IRR 3.0 [95% CI 2.2-4.0]), but not death 0.9, 95% 0.4-2.0). Article Summary Line Healthcare are hospitalized more frequently than non-healthcare when adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities.
Introduction Many authors have written about the need to treat patients closer their beds, in order observe them more as distinct people. The FAST HUG mnemonic, which consists of a checklist, was suggested an idea be employed everyday, by professionals dealing with who are critically ill.Minding these questions and motivated follow patients' treatment closer, we put into practice instrument developed Jean-Louis Vincent, evaluating seven most important procedures ill patients, performed...
