Between weeks 40 2020 and 8 2021, the World Health Organization European Region experienced a 99.8% reduction in sentinel influenza virus positive detections (33/25,606 tested; 0.1%) relative to an average of 14,966/39,407 (38.0%; p < 0.001) over same time previous six seasons. COVID-19 pandemic public health physical distancing measures may have extinguished 2020/21 seasonal epidemic with just few sporadic all viral subtypes. This might possibly continue during remainder season.
Abstract Background Conflict situations, armed or not, have been associated with emergence and transmission of infectious diseases. This review aims to identify the pathways through which diseases emerge within conflict situations outline appropriate disease preparedness response strategies. Methods A systematic was performed representing published evidence from January 2000 October 2023. Ovid Medline Embase were utilised obtain literature on in any settings. The adhered PRISMA (Preferred...
Abstract Avian influenza viruses (AIV) remain prevalent among wild bird populations in the European Union and Economic Area (EU/EEA), leading to significant illness death of birds. Transmission between mammal species has been observed, particularly fur animal farms, where outbreaks have reported. While transmission from infected birds humans is rare, there instances exposure these since 2020 without any symptomatic infections reported EU/EEA. However, continue evolve globally, with migration...
This article presents and compares coronavirus disease 2019 attack rates for infection, hospitalization, intensive care unit (ICU) admission death in healthcare workers (HCWs) non-HCWs nine European countries from 31st January 2020 to 13th 2021. Adjusted rate ratios HCWs (compared with non-HCWs) were 3.0 [95% confidence interval (CI) 2.2-4.0] 1.8 (95% CI 1.2-2.7) 1.9 1.1-3.2) ICU 0.9 0.4-2.0) death. Among hospitalized cases, the case-fatality ratio was 1.8% 8.2% non-HCWs. Differences may be...
Abstract Background Type 1 narcolepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy associated with the HLA allele DQB 1*06:02 . Genetic predisposition along external triggering factors may drive autoimmune responses, ultimately leading to selective loss of hypocretin‐positive neurons. Objective The aim this study was investigate potential aetiological in Swedish cases postvaccination (Pandemrix) defined interferon‐gamma ( IFN γ) production from...
We collected data from 10 EU/EEA countries on 240 COVID-19 outbreaks occurring July-October 2021 in long-term care facilities with high vaccination coverage. Among 17,268 residents, 3,832 (22.2%) cases were reported. Median attack rate was 18.9% (country range: 2.8-52.4%), 17.4% of hospitalised, 10.2% died. In fully vaccinated adjusted relative risk for increased outbreak rate. Findings highlight the importance early detection and rapid containment through effective infection prevention...
Objective To assess incidence of condyloma after two doses quadrivalent human papillomavirus (qHPV) vaccine, by time since first vaccine dose, in girls and women initiating vaccination before age 20 years. Design Register-based nationwide open cohort study. Setting Sweden. Participants Girls qHPV years between 2006 2012. The study included 264 498 girls, whom 72 042 had received 185 456 all three doses. Main outcome measure Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) estimated second months (m) at...
Abstract Purpose To investigate whether herpes zoster vaccine (HZV) was associated with socioeconomic status in Stockholm, when the reimbursed Sweden. Methods This an observational retrospective case‐control study, using population‐based health care registers. During study period, September 2013 to November 2014, HZV as part of National Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme Sweden and recommended for individuals over 50 years. A case any person, living Stockholm County, who received during period....
Increased narcolepsy incidence was observed in Sweden following the 2009 influenza vaccination with Pandemrix®. A substitution of nucleoprotein for 1934 variant has been implicated development. The aims were to determine (a) antibody levels toward wild-type A/H1N1-2009[A/California/04/2009(H1N1)] (NP-CA2009) and Pandemrix-[A/Puerto Rico/8/1934(H1N1)] (NP-PR1934) nucleoproteins 43 patients 64 age-matched controls; (b) affinity reciprocal competitive assays 11 childhood compared 21 (c) (H1N1...
Objectives To investigate disease history before A(H1N1)pdm09 vaccination as a risk factor for narcolepsy. Methods Case-control study in Sweden. Cases included persons referred Multiple Sleep Latency Test between 2009 and 2010, identified through diagnostic sleep centres confirmed independent review of medical charts. Controls, selected from the total population register, were matched to cases on age, gender, MSLT-referral date county residence. Disease (prescriptions diagnoses) was...
Abstract We assessed the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare workers (HCWs) from data 2.9 million cases reported nine countries in EU/EEA. Compared to non-HCWs, HCWs had a higher adjusted risk hospitalization (IRR 3.0 [95% CI 2.2-4.0]), but not death 0.9, 95% 0.4-2.0). Article Summary Line Healthcare are hospitalized more frequently than non-healthcare when adjusting for age, sex, and comorbidities.
ABSTRACT Objectives In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries implemented various non-pharmaceutical interventions(NPIs). With this systematic review, we investigated effectiveness of NPIs in mitigating SARS-CoV-2 transmission by assessing empirical evidence and data obtained through modelling studies. Design We searched Medline(OVID) EMBASE until 26 May 2022. The PICO framework was used determine eligibility Populations were restricted studies on humans, there no geographical...
