Nitric oxide (NO)-related activity has been shown to be protective against Plasmodium falciparum in vitro. It hypothesized, however, that excess NO production contributes the pathogenesis of cerebral malaria. The purpose this study was compare markers [urinary and plasma nitrate + nitrite (NOx)], leukocyte-inducible nitric synthase type 2 (NOS2), TNF-alpha IL-10 levels with disease severity 191 Tanzanian children without Urine NOx excretion (corrected for renal impairment) were inversely...
Acute rheumatic fever is a major cause of heart disease in Aboriginal Australians. The epidemiology differs from that observed regions with temperate climates; streptococcal pharyngitis reportedly rare, and pyoderma highly prevalent. A link between acute has been proposed but yet to be proven. Group C beta-hemolytic streptococci group G have also implicated the pathogenesis.
The presenting features, modes of treatment and clinical course were reviewed for 55 patients with pyogenic liver abscess, seen at Duke University Medical Center over a 15-year period. Thirty-three had solitary abscess 22 multiple abscesses. Most between the ages 40 60 years. Males predominated, 2.4:1. Major underlying conditions included biliary tract disease, malignancy colonic disease. Eight patients, each no identifiable condition. Symptoms signs nonspecific: fever, chills, focal...
Streptococcus pyogenes, or group A (GAS), infections contribute to a high burden of disease in Aboriginal Australians, causing skin and immune sequelae such as rheumatic heart disease. Controlling these populations has proven difficult, with transmission dynamics being poorly understood. We aimed identify the relative contributions impetigo asymptomatic throat carriage GAS transmission.
Consensus recommendations for managing chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD) and bronchiectasis, based on systematic reviews, were developed Australian New Zealand children adults during a multidisciplinary workshop. The diagnosis of bronchiectasis requires high-resolution computed tomography scan the chest. People with symptoms but non-diagnostic scans, have CSLD, which may progress to radiological bronchiectasis. CSLD/bronchiectasis is suspected when wet cough persists beyond 8 weeks....
Some strains of non-multidrug-resistant, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (nmMRSA) in Australia are likely to have emerged from methicillin-susceptible S. (MSSA) remote Aboriginal communities.
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) was found in the tracheobronchial secretions of 14 46 (30%) consecutive patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The HSV has not hitherto been associated ARDS, and most previous reports lower tract have come from autopsy material. In present study, diagnosis during life initially made by identification characteristic inclusion bodies bronchial epithelial cells obtained aspiration. presence need for more prolonged support an increased late mortality.
Background Indigenous children in Australia and Alaska have very high rates of chronic suppurative lung disease (CSLD)/bronchiectasis. Antibiotics, including frequent or long-term azithromycin short-term beta-lactam therapy both countries, are often prescribed to treat these patients. In the Bronchiectasis Observational Study we examined over several years nasopharyngeal carriage antibiotic resistance respiratory bacteria two PCV7-vaccinated populations. Methods aged 0.5–8.9 with...
Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis (SDSE) and pyogenes share skin throat niches with extensive genomic homology horizontal gene transfer (HGT) possibly underlying shared disease phenotypes. It is unknown if cross-species transmission interaction occurs. Here, we conduct a analysis of longitudinal household survey in remote Australian First Nations communities for patterns HGT. Collected from 4547 person-consultations, analyse 294 SDSE 315 S. genomes. We find intersects...
ABSTRACT Community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) has emerged as a major public health problem in Australia, many other parts of the world. High rates CA-MRSA skin and soft tissue infection have been reported from Aboriginal communities. We used single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) genotyping typing system based on multilocus sequence type (MLST) database to investigate epidemiology methicillin-sensitive S. (MSSA) over 12-month period three remote communities...
Background. Regional differences in the prevalence of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) and PVL isoform- harboring strains as well local population structure Staphylococcus aureus may influence clinical spectrum S. infections.
ABSTRACT Streptococcus pyogenes is commonly believed to be resistant trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (SXT), resulting in reservations about using SXT for skin and soft tissue infections (SSTI) where S. involved. ' vitro susceptibility depends on the medium's thymidine content. Thymidine allows bypass sulfur-mediated inhibition of folate metabolism and, historically, has resulted apparently reduced sulfur antibacterials. The low concentration Mueller-Hinton agar (MHA) now regulated. We explored...
Many studies focus on impediments to healthy ageing, but few examine factors leading ageing. Whilst many older First Nations people are ageing well, have examined this issue in people. This study indicators associated with the Torres Strait region of Queensland, Australia. Data from a Dementia Prevalence Study (2015-2018) were used explore 249 participants. A specific Healthy Ageing Index was created, based 10 dataset. One point assigned for each indicator, higher scores representing...
Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a major health concern for Aboriginal Australians. A key component of RHD control is prevention recurrent acute rheumatic fever (ARF) using long-term secondary prophylaxis with intramuscular benzathine penicillin (BPG). This the most important and cost-effective step in control. However, there are significant challenges to effective implementation programs. project aimed increase understanding improve quality care through development continuous...
Abstract The reduced prevalence of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in countries with endemic parasitic worm infections suggests a protective role for worms against metabolic disorders, however clinical evidence has been non-existent. This 2-year randomised, double-blinded trial Australia hookworm infection 40 male female adults at risk assessed the safety potential benefits treatment either 20 ( n = 14) or 13) Necator americanus larvae (L3) Placebo (Registration ACTRN12617000818336)....
