Context: In the ob/ob mice, keeping adiponectin concentrations in physiological range (through overexpression of this gene adipose tissue) results expansion fat mass and protection against metabolic co-morbidities. Objective: The aim study was to test humans whether plasma levels, similar those found lean subjects, are associated with metabolically healthy obese phenotype. Design Setting: A cross-sectional analysis performed a cohort nonobese subjects aged 18–70 yr. medical history taken,...

To examine the association between thyroid function and components of metabolic syndrome insulin resistance in an Hispanic population.Cross-sectional study.Subjects with no history disease or diabetes were included. Thyroid was stratified as euthyroid subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) status subsequently by free thyroxine (FT(4)) TSH tertiles. The (defined 2004 Adult Treatment Panel III criteria) status, TSH, FT(4) examined.A total 3148 subjects analyzed. prevalence SCH 8.3%. similar patients...

OBJECTIVE—To determine the impact of diabetes on rates tuberculosis in a region where both diseases are prevalent. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—Data from population-based cohort patients with pulmonary undergoing clinical and mycobacteriologic evaluation (isolation, identification, drug-susceptibility testing, IS6110-based genotyping spoligotyping) were linked to 2000 National Health Survey (ENSA2000), national probabilistic, polystage, stratified, cluster household survey civilian,...

Common polymorphisms in the fat mass and obesity‐associated gene ( FTO ) have shown strong association with obesity several populations. In present study, we explored of other biochemical parameters Mexican population. We also assessed expression levels adipose tissue obese nonobese individuals. The study comprised 788 unrelated Mexican‐Mestizo individuals 31 subcutaneous biopsies from lean women. single‐nucleotide (SNPs) rs9939609, rs1421085, rs17817449 were associated obesity, particularly...

Background Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) increases glucose uptake. It is unknown if FGF21 serum levels are affected by exercise. Methodology/Principal Findings This was a comparative longitudinal study. Anthropometric and biochemical evaluation were carried out before after bout of exercise repeated two weeks daily supervised The study sample composed 60 sedentary young healthy women. mean age 24±3.7 years old, the BMI 21.4±7.0 kg/m2. anthropometric characteristics did not change...

A controlled clinical trial on the efficacy of a nortriptyline-fluphenazine combination was carried out in patients with painful diabetic polyneuropathy. visual analog scale used to evaluate relief pain or paresthesia. Significant both and paresthesia obtained this combination. The differences were statistically significant. Side effects frequent but not usually severe enough lead cessation these medications.

OBJECTIVE—To describe the clinical characteristics of diabetic population that formed part a population-based survey conducted in México. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS—In 2000, information was obtained from 42,886 subjects aged ≥20 years using multistage sampling procedure. Standardized questionnaires were used. Anthropometric measurements, blood pressure, and capillary glucose concentrations taken. RESULTS—Type 2 diabetes found 3,597 (age-adjusted prevalence 8.18%), which 2,878 (80%) had...

The effect of metformin (1000 mg twice a day) on markers endothelial activation, inflammation, and coagulation was investigated in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) 16-wk, randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study. Soluble intercellular adhesion molecule, soluble vascular cell C-reactive protein, TNFα, von Willebrand factor, tissue plasminogen activator were measured at baseline the end trial. Subjects IGT (n = 55, 14 males 41 females), aged 48.4 ± 9.6 yr body mass...

To describe the prevalence of lipid abnormalities found in Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey 2006 (ENSANut 2006).Information was obtained from 4 040 subjects aged 20 to 69 years, studied after a 9- 12-hour fast.Median concentrations were: cholesterol 198.5 mg/dl, triglycerides 139.6 HDL-cholesterol 39.0 non-HDL-cholesterol 159.5 mg/dl LDL-cholesterol 131.5 mg/dl. The most frequent abnormality below 40 with 60.5% (95%CI 58.2-62.8%). Hypercholesterolemia (> 200 mg/dl) had frequency...

Background Gut microbiota, by influencing multiple metabolic processes in the host, is an important determinant of human health and disease. However, gut dysbiosis associated with complications shows inconsistent patterns. This likely driven factors shaping microbial composition that have largely been under-evaluated, at a population level, school-age children, especially from developing countries. Results Through characterization, 16S sequencing, largest population-based school-aged children...

Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes is a growing problem in Mexico. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy and safety of rosiglitazone mg or 4 twice daily (bd) combination with metformin 2.5 g/day Mexican patients whose type inadequately controlled alone. Methods This randomized, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled conducted at four centers A total 116 were randomized plus placebo ( n =39), bd =37), =40) for 26 weeks. Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a complex syndrome of acute that occurs following infusion intravascular contrast agents, and associated with an increased risk for adverse cardiovascular events. While there no ideal biomarker making early diagnosis CIN, we hypothesized levels specific circulating microRNA (miRNA) species might serve such role. Methods: miRNA microarray assays were used to detect miRNAs in the kidney tissue rats studied as animal model CIN. Real-time PCR was...

Hypertension is associated with insulin resistance (IR), metabolic syndrome (MS), and arterial stiffness. Non-insulin-based IR indexes were developed as tools for screening. Here, we aimed to evaluate the novel non-insulin-based Metabolic Score (METS-IR) index prediction of incident hypertension stiffness evaluated using pulse wave velocity (PWV) analysis, compared other indexes.
