We describe two extended haplotypes that cover the human tau gene. In a total of ∼200 unrelated caucasian individuals there is complete disequilibrium between polymorphisms which span gene (which covers ∼100 kb DNA). This suggests establishment was an ancient event and either recombination suppressed in this region, or recombinant genes are selected against. Furthermore, we show more common haplotype (H1) significantly over-represented patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP),...

To analyze the association of polymorphisms in tau gene with pathologically confirmed corticobasal degeneration (CBD).The authors previously described an extended haplotype (H1) that covers human and is associated development progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). The now extend this analysis to CBD, a neurodegenerative condition clinical neuropathologic similarities PSP. Like PSP, CBD accumulation aggregates containing 4-repeat isoforms tau. Because difficulty diagnosis only analyzed cases...

Expanded glutamine repeats of the ataxin-2 (ATXN2) protein cause spinocerebellar ataxia type 2 (SCA2), a rare neurodegenerative disorder. More recent studies have suggested that expanded ATXN2 are genetic risk factor for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) via an RNA-dependent interaction with TDP-43. Given phenotypic diversity observed in SCA2 patients, we set out to determine polymorphic nature repeat length across spectrum disorders. In this study, genotyped 3919 disease patients and 4877...

Splice-site and missense mutations have been identified in tau associated with frontotemporal dementia parkinsonism linked to chromosome 17. In this study we assessed the genetic contribution of three patient series non-Alzheimer's (non-AD) degenerative dementia. The groups included (1) a community-based from Minnesota, MN; (2) referral clinicopathological tauopathy; (3) pathologically confirmed familial Manchester, UK. Comparing clinical series: stringently diagnosed Manchester series, were...

Background Depression in older adults is common and associated with poor quality of life, increased morbidity early mortality, health social care use. Collaborative care, a low-intensity intervention for depression that shown to be effective working-age adults, has not yet been evaluated people who are managed UK primary care. The CollAborative Screen-Positive EldeRs (CASPER) plus trial fills the evidence gap identified by most recent guidelines on management. Objectives To establish...

Objectives: Multi-method approaches are increasingly advocated in health services research (HSR). This paper examines the use of standardised self-completion questionnaires and questions, during in-depth interviews, a technique termed 'questerviews'. Methods: 'Questerview' techniques were used four empirical studies perceptions conducted by authors. The included both questions or interviews. Respondents tape-recorded while they completed encouraged to discuss their definitions terms...
