The coat protein (CP) gene of rice stripe virus was introduced into two japonica varieties by electroporation protoplasts. resultant transgenic plants expressed the CP at high levels (up to 0.5% total soluble protein) and exhibited a significant level resistance infection. Plants derived from selfed progeny primary transformants also showed viral resistance, indicating stable transmission trait next generation. Moreover, virally encoded strip disease-specific not detected in expressing 8...

A previously isolated rice (Oryza sativa) rbcS gene was further characterized. This analysis revealed specific sequences in the 5[prime] regulatory region of that are conserved genes other monocotyledonous species. In transgenic plants, we examined expression [beta]-glucuronidase (gusA) reporter directed by 2.8-kb promoter gene. To examine differences regulation and dicotyledonous promoters, activity a tomato also investigated plants. Our results indicated both promoters confer...

Fundamental characteristics of (111) oriented GaAs/AlGaAs graded-index separate-confinement-heterostructure single quantum well lasers have been compared with conventional (100) lasers. In particular, the threshold current density Jth does not change width Lz in range Lz=30–100 Å, which corresponds to an ideal extreme. The lowest 145 A/cm2 together a high characteristic temperature T0 186 K threshold-temperature dependence has achieved for 40 Å and cavity length 490 μm. on showed that is...

The interface disorder of quantum wells grown by molecular beam epitaxy at high substrate temperature is investigated low-temperature photoluminescence. excitonic emission from a single well sharp peak, and the width precisely determined peak energy does not equal to integral multiples one-monolayer in almost all samples. These results indicate that lateral size growth islands with height much smaller than exciton diameter acts as layer AlAs mole fraction barrier layer.

We previously demonstrated that high-performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC/MS) equipped a graphitized carbon column (GCC) is useful for the structural analysis of carbohydrates in glycoproteins. Using LC/MS GCC, sulfated N-linked oligosaccharides were found erythropoietin (EPO) expressed baby hamster kidney cells. Sulfation occurs part EPO. Sulfated monosaccharide residue oligosaccharide was determined by exoglycosidase digestion followed sugar...

The interlobular duct cells of the guinea-pig pancreas secrete HCO3− across their luminal membrane into a HCO3−-rich (125 mM) fluid against sixfold concentration gradient. Since transport cannot be achieved by Cl−/HCO3− exchange under these conditions, we have investigated possibility that it is mediated an anion conductance. To determine whether electrochemical potential gradient would favor efflux, measured intracellular (Vm) in microperfused, segments various physiological conditions....

We report on a method to fabricate varifocal microlens array that employs dielectric elastomer (DE) sandwiched between two electrodes as the lens material. The is patterned electrode plates, and when are subjected controllable operating voltage, DE material "squeezed" by Maxwell force deform pattern, thus resulting in curvature deformation yielding tunable profile. focal length performance ranges from 950 mm infinity. When compared with liquid-filled lenses, solid-based lenses more robust...
