Political, economic, and epidemiological changes in Brazil have affected health the system. We used Global Burden of Disease Study 2016 (GBD 2016) results to understand changing patterns inform policy responses.
Toxoplasmosis, a disease described worldwide, which is caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, commonly involves retina. The has higher impact in immunocompromised individuals and congenital infection because of severity central nervous system involvement. Although simple prophylactic measures could reduce transmission, T. gondii seroprevalence still high, especially South America. Educational campaigns development new drugs to prevent primary potentially burden disease.
Purpose: To estimate the annual loss of productivity from blindness and moderate to severe visual impairment (MSVI) using simple models (analogous how a rapid assessment model relates comprehensive model) based on minimum wage (MW) gross national income (GNI) per capita (US$, 2011).Methods: Cost (COB) was calculated for age group ≥50 years in nine sample countries by assuming current MW GNI capita. It assumed that all individuals work until 65 old half prevalent is 50–64 group. For cost MSVI...
BackgroundCataract is the leading cause of blindness globally. Effective cataract surgical coverage (eCSC) measures number people in a population who have been operated on for cataract, and had good outcome, as proportion all or requiring surgery. Therefore, eCSC describes service access (ie, coverage, [CSC]) adjusted quality. The 74th World Health Assembly endorsed global target 30-percentage point increase by 2030. To enable monitoring progress towards this target, we analysed Rapid...
Recent reports from different world regions suggest ocular syphilis is re-emerging, in parallel with an increasing incidence of the systemic infection globally. We conducted a large observational study 127 persons consecutively treated for at public medical centers Brazil over 2.5-year period ending July 2015. Of 104 individuals serologically tested human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), 34.6% were positive. Ophthalmological evaluations included measurement Snellen visual acuity and intraocular...
BackgroundIn 2021, WHO Member States endorsed a global target of 40-percentage-point increase in effective refractive error coverage (eREC; with 6/12 visual acuity threshold) by 2030. This study models and regional estimates eREC as baseline for the initiative.MethodsThe Vision Loss Expert Group analysed data from 565 448 participants 169 population-based eye surveys conducted since 2000 to calculate (met need/[met need + undermet unmet need]). A binary logistic regression model was used...
Syphilitic uveitis is re-emerging alongside the systemic infection. In July 2017, an international group of uveitis-specialised ophthalmologists formed International Ocular Syphilis Study Group to define current practice patterns.103 members based in 35 countries completed a 25-item questionnaire focused on case load, clinical presentations, use and interpretation investigations, treatment indicators poor prognosis.Members managed mean 6.1 patients with syphilitic clinics that averaged 707...
To describe the rational for, and methods that will be employed to develop, WHO package of eye care interventions (PECI).The development conducted in four steps: (1) selection conditions (for which included package) based on epidemiological data causes vision impairment blindness, prevalence estimates health facility data; (2) identification related evidence for selected from clinical practice guidelines high-quality systematic reviews by a technical working group; (3) expert agreement...
