The construction of Pohang Accelerator Laboratory X-ray Free-Electron Laser (PAL-XFEL), a 0.1-nm hard free-electron laser (FEL) facility based on 10-GeV S-band linear accelerator (LINAC), is achieved in Pohang, Korea by the end 2016. 1.11 km-long building was completed 2014, and installation LINAC undulators started January 2015. LINAC, together with beamlines, commissioning began April 2016, first lasing FEL line 14 June progress PAL-XFEL its commission are reported here.

PAL-XFEL utilizes a three-chicane bunch compression (3-BC) scheme (the very first of its kind in operation) for free-electron laser (FEL) operation. The addition third compressor allows more effective mitigation coherent synchrotron radiation during and an increased flexibility system configuration. Start-to-end simulations the effects radiofrequency jitter on electron beam performance show that using 3-BC leads to better compared with two-chicane scheme. Together high linac system, it...

Two undulator beamlines, one hard X-ray and soft X-ray, are in operation at PAL-XFEL. Radiation produced during the FEL may impair magnetic property of magnets affect performance. Accumulated radiation sections is being measured by using optically stimulated luminescent dosimeters (OSLDs) once per few months. Over 10 Gy gamma ray was detected some locations both beamlines. However, measurement OSLDs we do not have information on which accelerator modes produce such high level undulators. To...
