2050 탄소중립 실현을 위한 에너지 전환시대에 접어들면서 광물 확보의 중요성이 그 이전 시대와 비교하여 높아지고 있으며, 특히 공급 리스크가 존재하는 ‘핵심광물’에 대한 전세계 각국의 관심이 최근 들어 고조되고 있다. 주요국들은 선제적으로 새로이 핵심광물 목록을 발표하거나 기존 목록의 갱신에 나서고 있는데, 중에서도 배터리 분야와 관련된 리튬, 니켈, 코발트, 흑연 등의 광물이 공통적으로 선정된 것으로 나타난다. 이들 핵심광물의 수요는 2020년 대비 2040년 최소 3배에서 42 배까지 증가할 예상되고 이는 친환경 전기차 및 저장 시스템 분야에서의 수요 확대에 주로 기인할 보인다. 배터리용 4종의 광산 생산지는 종류에 따라 상이하게 나타나나 상품성 금속 또는 재료의 생산이 대체로 중국에서 이루어지고 있고, 현재 급격 한 증가에 가격이 급상승하고 있어 위기성이 높은 상황이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 생산 현황, 시장 기술 동향에 대해 분석하고 이로부터 국내 확보에 시사점을 제시하였다.
