We report a rapid increase in enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) infections, with 139 cases reported from eight European countries between 31 July and 14 October 2021. This upsurge is line the seasonality of EV-D68 was presumably stimulated by widespread reopening after COVID-19 lockdown. Most were identified September, but more are to be expected coming months. Reinforcement clinical awareness, diagnostic capacities surveillance urgently needed Europe.
Bronchiolitis is the most common viral infection of lower respiratory tract in infants under 2 years age. The aim this study was to analyze and compare seasonal bronchiolitis peaks before during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.Descriptive, prospective, observational study. Patients with severe admitted Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) a referral tertiary hospital between September 2010 June 2021 were included. Demographic data collected. Viral laboratory-confirmation carried out. Each season...
OBJECTIVESThis study investigated the prevalence, genetic diversity, and evolution of human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) in Barcelona from 2013 to 2023.METHODSRespiratory specimens patients with RTI suspicion at Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron were collected October/2013 May/2023 for laboratory-confirmation viruses. Next-generation sequencing was performed randomly-selected samples Illumina technology. Phylogenetic analyses whole genome sequences BEAST v1.10.4. Signals selection...
BackgroundHuman metapneumovirus (HMPV) is an important aetiologic agent of respiratory tract infection (RTI). This study aimed to describe the prevalence, genetic diversity, and evolutionary dynamics HMPV.MethodsLaboratory-confirmed HMPV were characterised based on partial-coding G gene sequences with MEGA.v6.0. WGS was performed Illumina, analyses Datamonkey Nextstrain.ResultsHMPV prevalence 2.5%, peaking in February-April alternation predominance HMPV-A –B until emergence SARS-CoV-2, not...
<title>Abstract</title> Introduction: Respiratory viral infections, including SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza, rhinovirus, and adenovirus, are major causes of acute illness (ARI) in children. Symptom-based predictive models valuable tools for expediting diagnoses, particularly primary care settings. This study assessed the effectiveness machine learning-based estimating infection probabilities these common pediatric viruses using symptom data....
Abstract Background RSV causes a significant burden including hospitalization in infants. Nirsevimab prophylaxis was implemented October 2023 Catalonia (Spain) for all children &lt; 6-months-old to reduce RSV-associated morbidity. We aimed define the impact of nirsevimab administration on clinical outcomes hospitalized with infection. Methods compared data from hospitalizations 16-years-old between 2022 - March and 2024. Respiratory samples were collected 11 hospitals COPEDICAT network...
During the 2023-2024 season, nirsevimab significantly reduced risk of bronchiolitis and confirmed RSV infections in primary care, hospital, pediatric intensive care unit admissions among infants aged 0 to 11 months, even a season with high community burden, particularly for older infants. These findings are very useful public health authorities continue implement immunization campaigns against coming seasons. Moreover, universal represents transformative step towards reducing burden With...
(1) Background: Respiratory viral infections, including those caused by SARS-CoV-2, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza viruses, rhinovirus, and adenovirus, are major causes of acute infections (ARIs) in children. Symptom-based predictive models valuable tools for expediting diagnoses, particularly primary care settings. This study assessed the effectiveness machine learning-based estimating infection probabilities these common pediatric using symptom data. (2) Methods: Data were...
Aim: Human respiratory syncytial virus (HRSV) is the main cause of tract infections among infants. Materials & methods: In present study, molecular epidemiology HRSV detected from 2013 to 2017 has been described. Results: A 10% collected samples were laboratory confirmed for HRSV. Patients under 2 years age susceptible population disease, but an increasingly number patients over 65 was reported. Epidemics usually started in autumn and ended spring. Both groups co-circulated every season,...
Aim: To describe the circulation, genetic diversity and clinical features of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in pediatric patients that attended Hospital Universitari Vall d'Hebron, Spain from 2014 to 2016. Materials & methods: Partial G gene was sequenced laboratory-confirmed HMPV respiratory specimens for subsequent phylogenetic analysis. Results: A total 121 different samples were out 6658 received. The highest circulation February April, with a prevalence 3%. Different groups within both...
We observed an unusual pattern of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children under 5 years Catalonia (Spain). a near absence RSV during winter months and subsequent surge the late spring. Primary care electronic health records combined with hospital laboratory confirmation could be used to monitor trends pathogens.
Abstract Background Viral lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) are the leading cause of hospitalization in children. In Catalonia (Spain), information is scarce about burden viral LRTIs paediatric hospitalizations. The aim this study to describe epidemiological, clinical, virological and economic features hospitalizations due LRTI. Methods From October 2012 December 2020, children aged <16 years admitted a tertiary hospital (Spain) with confirmed LRTI were included study. Virus...
Between 2014 and 2018, we evaluated the severity of 687 cases bronchiolitis caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in Catalonia, Spain. Compared to RSV-B, RSV-A required intensive care (adjusted relative risk (aRR) = 1.44, p < 0.01) support (aRR 1.07, more often; hospital stay was one day longer (p 0.01). Subgroup identification may aid clinical evaluation seasonal healthcare planning.
Aim: To describe the genetic diversity of enteroviruses (EV) causing hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) herpangina, especially coxsackievirus (CV)-A6, from patients attended at pediatric primary care centers during 2017–2018 season. Methods: Phylogenetic analysis partial VP1 region was performed for characterization. The complete 3Dpol proteins were sequenced lineage determination detection recombination events. Results: An 80% samples EV laboratory-confirmed. CV-A6 most detected (70%)...
Tizanidine is a central alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist indicated for the treatment of spasticity in adults; however, its use pediatric population considered off-label. In adults, dose gradually titrated until desired reduction muscle tone achieved. Hypotension frequent adverse effect, but impaired liver function not characteristic overdose. We report 2-year-old male affected with spastic quadriplegia (treated clonazepam and tizanidine) dysphagia (he was fed by nasogastric tube). Two...

Primary care electronic health records combined with hospital RSV laboratory confirmations could be useful surveillance system to monitorize trends pathogens.
Abstract Purpose: Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) associated infections have historically been the cause of seasonal paediatric hospital departments’ saturation. During COVID-19 pandemic, community incidence RSV was reduced, thus burden. The last season broke out in early October 2022, 4-6 weeks earlier than pre-pandemic years, and thought to be most demanding date. Our aim assess burden RSV-related hospitalizations on a referral (Catalonia, Spain) during years recent 2022-2023 season....
