Background Interleukin (IL)-6–related cytokines share gp130 as the signal-transducing protein. Downstream of gp130, two pathways have been recognized, Janus kinase–signal transducer and activator transcription (JAK-STAT) pathway Ras–mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway. To determine whether these signaling through are present in cardiac myocytes, we examined their activation by using leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF), which is a member IL-6 cytokine family. Efforts to identify host determinants for malaria have been hindered by the absence of a nucleus in erythrocytes, which precludes genetic manipulation cell parasite replicates. We used cultured red blood cells derived from hematopoietic stem carry out forward screen Plasmodium falciparum determinants. found that CD55 is an essential factor P. invasion. CD55-null erythrocytes were refractory invasion all isolates because parasites failed attach properly erythrocyte surface. Thus, attractive...

Absorption spectra have been measured in the near-infrared region for a thin-film sample of single-wall carbon nanotubes 1.2–1.5 nm diameter. Two absorption peaks are observed at 0.7 and 1.2 eV. The spectrum has compared with calculation based on tight-binding model taking into account distribution diameter helical arrangement tubes. We found that one-dimensional exciton effect plays an important role fundamental optical transition semiconducting nanotubes.

As previous meetings, matters pertaining to blood group antigen nomenclature were discussed. Eleven new antigens added seven systems. This brings current total recognized by ISBT 346, which 308 are clustered within 36 groups remaining 38 currently unassigned a known system.

Abstract Cancer cells often display altered cell-surface glycans compared to their nontransformed counterparts. However, functional contributions of cancer initiation and progression remain poorly understood. Here, from expression-based analyses across lineages, we found that melanomas exhibit significant transcriptional changes in glycosylation-related genes. This gene signature revealed that, normal melanocytes, downregulate I-branching glycosyltransferase, GCNT2, leading a loss I-branched...

BACKGROUND Platelet concentrates (PCs) are the most common blood components eliciting nonhemolytic transfusion reactions (NHTRs), such as allergic and febrile reactions. However, precise mechanisms of NHTRs in PC remain largely unknown. Previous studies reported that mitochondria‐derived damage‐associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) could be important mediators innate cell inflammation. Platelets (PLTs) represent a major reservoir mitochondria circulation. The aim this study was to determine...
