Chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a risk factor for Barrett's esophagus (BE), the most important surrogate marker development of esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). The need to document presence intestinal metaplasia in biopsies from columnar lined (CLE) diagnose BE debated. objective this study was prospectively evaluate prevalence and factors CLE large cohort GERD patients undergoing upper endoscopy.Consecutive presenting endoscopy unit at tertiary referral center their index...

Background. There is a wide disparity in the use of automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) or continuous ambulatory (CAPD) UK. This may be due to perceived quality life and technique survival advantage with APD, although evidence lacking.

Abstract Background Recent studies have shown high prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia associated with frailty‐ and age‐related muscle weakness. Strength training exercises been advocated for locomotive health maintenance in the elderly positive outcomes. As muscles involved phase swallowing are also comprised striated muscles, aim this study was to determine biomechanical effect a novel resistance exercise program, Swallowing Against Laryngeal Restriction ( SALR ), on pharyngeal healthy...

The straight leg raise (SLR) maneuver during high-resolution manometry (HRM) can assess esophagogastric junction (EGJ) barrier function by measuring changes in intraesophageal pressure (IEP) when intra-abdominal is increased. We aimed to determine whether increased esophageal SLR predicts pathologic acid exposure time (AET).Adult patients with persistent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms undergoing HRM and pH-impedance or wireless pH study off proton pump inhibitor were...

To date, rehabilitative exercises aimed at strengthening the pharyngeal muscles have not been developed due to inability successfully overload and fatigue these during their contraction, a necessary requirement for strength training. The purpose of this study was test hypothesis that applying resistance against anterosuperior movement hyolaryngeal complex will by repetitive swallowing result in manifested reduction peristaltic amplitude. Studies were done two groups. In group 1 studies 15...

The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence defecation postural modification devices (DPMDs) on normal bowel patterns. The introduction DPMDs has brought increased awareness habits in western populations.A prospective crossover volunteers performed that included real-time collection data regarding movements (BMs) for 4 weeks (first 2 wk without DPMD and subsequent with DPMD). Primary outcomes interest BM duration, straining, emptiness use.In total, 52 participants (mean age, 29 y...

Background and study aim: Data are limited on the natural history of patients with Barrett's esophagus a diagnosis "indefinite for dysplasia" (IND). The aims this were to: (i) determine rates progression to high grade dysplasia (HGD) or esophageal adenocarcinoma, compare these low (LGD); (ii) proportion whose histological IND changed follow-up endoscopy. Patients methods: Demographic, endoscopic, histologic information diagnoses LGD at least 12 months extracted from database...

Abstract Background Recent technological advances incorporated in high resolution manometry have justifiably heightened interest manometric evaluation of the pharynx. Despite this interest, from both physiologic and clinical perspective there remain a number unanswered questions regarding magnitude variability pharyngeal pressure phenomena. Therefore, aim present study was to characterize healthy individuals inter‐subject recording‐site specific peristaltic Methods We studied 32 subjects...

Paraganglioma are tumours arising from neural crest cells of the sympathetic and parasympathetic paraganglia. Functional paraganglioma presents with symptoms catecholamine excess that includes hypertension, flushing, diaphoresis, etc. Non-functional usually found incidentally during imaging studies. Early diagnoses functional important because their removal is often curative. We present case a young man who presented hypertensive crisis severe headache, was later to have paraganglioma.
