Abstract. Southern Ocean (SO) shortwave (SW) radiation biases are a common problem in contemporary general circulation models (GCMs), with most exhibiting tendency to absorb too much incoming SW radiation. These have been attributed deficiencies the representation of clouds during austral summer months, either due cloud cover or albedo being low. The has focus many studies, which utilised satellite datasets for model evaluation. We use multi-year ship-based observations and CERES spaceborne...

Abstract. The maiden resupply voyage of HMNZS AOTEAROA to Winter Quarters Bay, McMurdo Sound, provided a vessel opportunity complete experimentation in the Ross Sea and Southern Ocean, focused on improving maritime safety. science programs included deployment 21 free floating wave buoys, 10 Global Drifters, 2 Argo Floats 85 expendable bathythermograph profilers. In addition, measurements meteorological oceanographic conditions sea ice characteristics were captured from onboard ship augmented...

Abstract In this study four mesoscale forecasting systems were used to investigate the four-dimensional structure of atmospheric refractivity and ducting layers that occur within evolving synoptic conditions over eastern seaboard United States. The aim was identify most important components contribute refractive structures simulated in a littoral environment. Over 7-day period April–May 2000 near Wallops Island, Virginia, meteorological parameters at ocean surface marine boundary layer...

Abstract Analysis of the weather and ocean conditions during recent pirate attacks in Indian Ocean region suggests that transition summer monsoon limits maritime piracy. A comparison all known 2010–11 with surface observations from Socotra Somali jet index same period indicates pirates attacking skiffs are thwarted when winds blow excess 9 m s−1. The wind speeds sea states encountered by individual were reconstructed using satellite altimetry data for 2010–11. Mean daily up to 20 s−1 two...

New Zealand (NZ) is an island nation with stewardship of ocean twenty times larger than its land area. While the challenges facing NZ's are similar to other maritime countries, no coherent national plan exists that meets needs scientists, stakeholders or kaitiakitanga (guardianship) in a changing climate. The NZ marine science community will use OceanObs'19 white paper establish framework and implementation for collaborative observing system (NZ-OOS). Co-production knowledge Māori be...

Iron-deficient erythropoiesis may occur in patients with adequate levels of storage iron as well those tissue deficiency. Here we compare two methods detecting iron-deficient erythropoiesis. The measurement percent hypochromic cells the full blood count provides a direct indicator zinc protoporphyrin (ZPP) determination is simple, precise and reproducible, also appears to provide sensitive index There was significant correlation between ZPP deficiency anaemia, rheumatoid arthritis renal...

Abstract The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has established a permanent wave observation station near Campbell Island, south of (52 45.71 S, 169 02.54E). site was chosen for logistical convenience and its unique location adjacent to the highly energetic Southern Ocean; allowing instrumentation typically deployed on continental shelf be used in this rarely observed southern environment. From February 2017, Triaxys Directional Wave Buoy moored 147 m depth, some 17 km island, with satellite...

The Tropical Atmospheric Propagation Study 2013 (TAPS 2013) was a two week field experiment focused on simultaneous measurements of one-way radar performance and environmental parameters effecting refractivity in the tropical environment. Defence Technology Agency (DTA) scientists collected series 108 profiles humidity, temperature pressure from 1.4 m to 100 above sea level during campaign. These low were enable comparison with modelled meteorological data.
