Recent animal studies demonstrate that vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) paired with movement induces movement-specific plasticity in motor cortex and improves forelimb function after stroke. We conducted a randomized controlled clinical pilot study of VNS rehabilitation on upper-limb ischemic stroke.Twenty-one participants stroke >6 months before moderate to severe impairment were plus or alone. Rehabilitation consisted three 2-hour sessions per week for 6 weeks, each involving >400 trials. In...

Asthmatic smokers have poor symptom control and accelerated decline in lung function. A reduced ratio of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9/tissue inhibitors metalloproteinases (TIMPs) nonsmokers with asthma has been implicated airway remodelling. We tested the hypothesis that sputum MMP-9 activity/TIMPs ratios are compared never-smokers associated function altered computed tomography (CT) measures wall dimensions. Lung function, dimensions by CT, induced concentrations (and activity) TIMP-1...

The aim study was to examine effect status urinary, sputum, and plasma eicosanoid concentrations relevant enzyme transcripts asthma. Methods In 108 smokers never with 45 healthy controls [smokers smokers], we measured urinary tetranor prostaglandin (PG)D 2 (PGDM) leukotriene (LT)E 4 , induced sputum...

Matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 has been implicated in the pathogenesis of COPD, although its link to disease severity is unclear. The purpose study was examine relationship between assessed by lung function and computed tomography (CT) sputum MMP-9 expression, concentration activity patients with COPD.In 53 COPD subjects, smokers ex-smokers; 46 healthy controls, never smokers, we measured concentrations (ELISA) enzyme (FRET), mRNA spirometry, diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide (DLco)...

Background The introduction of increasingly high speed drills for mastoid surgery has heightened the concern that cochlea damage may occur in both operated and nonoperated ear. It been observed clinically this could be associated with frequencies above 8,000 Hz that, to observe these changes, high-frequency audiometry should performed. Previous studies have investigated noise transmission at below 4,000 only. There having been, until recently, limitations equipment available measure higher...
