The Netherlands has experienced epidemics of vaccine preventable diseases largely confined to the Bible belt, an area where -among others- orthodox protestant groups are living. Lacking information on vaccination coverage in this minority, and its various subgroups, control is focused geographical belt. However, adequacy strategy questionable. This study assesses influence presence subgroups (orthodox denominations, OPDs) municipal We performed ecological at municipality level. Data number...
Between July 2016 and February 2017, 48 male cases of hepatitis A were notified in the Netherlands. Of these, 17 identified as men who have sex with (MSM). Ten 13 for whom sequencing information was available, infected a strain linked EuroPride that took place Amsterdam 2016. This is identical to has been causing large outbreak among MSM Taiwan.
Despite high vaccination coverage, there have recently been epidemics of vaccine preventable diseases in the Netherlands, largely confined to an orthodox protestant minority with religious objections vaccination. The consists various denominations either low, intermediate or coverage. All leave final decision vaccinate not up their individual members. To gain insight into how parents decide on vaccination, what arguments they use, and consequences decisions, we conducted in-depth interview...
Although childhood vaccination programs have been very successful, coverage in minority groups may be considerably lower than the general population. In order to increase such involvement of faith-based organizations and religious leaders has advocated. We assessed role promoting acceptance or refusal within an orthodox Protestant group with low The Netherlands.Semi-structured interviews were conducted from various denominations, who selected via purposeful sampling. Transcripts thematically...
The annual incidence rate of serogroup W invasive meningococcal disease in the Netherlands increased from < 0.05/100,000 (n 10) before 2015 to 0.5/100,000 = 80) 2017. Most isolates (94%) belong clonal complex 11. is highest among 5 year-olds and 15–24 year-olds. case fatality was 12% (17/138) 2015–2017. From May 2018, MenACWY vaccination replaces MenC at age 14 months October 13–14 are offered vaccination.
Since the early 1990s, Netherlands has experienced several large measles epidemics, in 1992-94, 1999-2000 and 2013-14. These outbreaks mainly affected orthodox Protestants, a geographically clustered population with overall lower measles-mumps-rubella first dose (MMR-1) vaccination coverage (60%) than rest of country (> 95%). In 2013-14 epidemic described here, which occurred between 27 May 2013 12 March 2014, 2,700 cases were reported. Several control measures implemented including MMR for...
A Dutch traveller returning from Suriname in early March 2017, presented with fever and severe acute liver injury. Yellow was diagnosed by (q)RT-PCR sequencing. During hospital stay, the patient's condition deteriorated she developed hepatic encephalopathy requiring transfer to intensive care. Although yellow has not been reported last four decades Suriname, vaccination is recommended World Health Organization for visitors this country.
Asylum seekers are a vulnerable population for contracting infectious diseases. Outbreaks occur among children and adults. In the Netherlands, asylum seeker offered vaccination according to National Immunization Program. Little is known about protection against vaccine-preventable diseases (VPD) in adult seekers. this 2016 study, we assessed immunity of nine VPD identify groups that might benefit from additional vaccinations. We invited Syria, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Eritrea Ethiopia...
On 21 November 2022, a wild poliovirus type 3 (WPV3) was isolated from an environmental surveillance sample of essential facilities in the Netherlands. All 51 employees with access to this strain were screened for ongoing or recent infection. One employee shedding WPV3 identified on 8 December and placed isolation; monitoring contact tracing initiated. continued 4 weeks stopped 5 January 2023. Isolation lifted 11 no further transmission detected.
In the Netherlands, HPV-vaccine uptake was 52% during 2009 catch-up campaign (birth cohorts 1993-1996). This increased to 61% in regular immunization program 2000-2001). However for birth 2003-2004 declined 45.5%. With this study we aimed gain insight into social, economic and cultural determinants that are associated with HPV-vaccination which subgroups a lower can be identified. addition, investigated whether influence of these factors changed over time. To performed database using...
Background: Although childhood vaccination programmes have been very successful, there are some hard to reach minority groups that object vaccination. The Netherlands has experienced several epidemics of vaccine-preventable diseases, confined the orthodox Protestant minority. However, coverage in this is still unknown and hampers prevention control epidemics. Methods: We estimated among its various subgroups (denominations), using two sub-studies with different design study population. For...
Since 2015, outbreaks of hepatitis A among men who have sex with (MSM) been reported worldwide. To examine the impact these MSM in Netherlands, we combined notification and epidemiological data sequence analysis. Our results show hazards within risk-groups spilling over into largely susceptible general population. One third outbreak-related virus genotypes were detected non-MSM cases.
Abstract Background In response to the recent serogroup W invasive meningococcal disease (IMD-W) epidemic in Netherlands, C (MenC) conjugate vaccination for children aged 14 months was replaced with a MenACWY vaccination, and mass campaign targeting individuals 14–18 years executed. We investigated impact of implementation 2018–2020 on incidence rates estimated vaccine effectiveness (VE). Methods extracted IMD cases diagnosed between July 2014 December 2020 from national surveillance system....
In recent years healthcare professionals have faced increasing concerns about the value of childhood vaccination and many find it difficult to deal with parents who object vaccination. general, are advised listen respectfully objections parents, provide honest information, attempt correct any misperceptions regarding Religious one possible reasons for refusing Although religious a long history, little is known way these specific objections. Prior to introduction of universal varicella vaccination, it is crucial gain insight into the willingness vaccinate among population. This because suboptimal national vaccination coverage might increase age infection in children, which will lead higher complication rates. We studied attitude and intention against Dutch public health professionals who execute National Immunisation Programme (NIP), parents. Medical doctors nurses regional services (RPHS) child clinics (CHC), a random sample...
On 3 April 2017, a wild poliovirus type 2 (WPV2) spill occurred in Dutch vaccine manufacturing plant. Two fully vaccinated operators with risk of exposure were advised on stringent personal hygiene and monitored for virus shedding. Poliovirus (WPV2-MEF1) was detected the stool one, 4 days after exposure, later also sewage samples. The operator isolated at home followed up until shedding stopped 29 exposure. No further transmission detected.

All recovered after treatment. Consumption food tap water ship associated with developing fever. freshwater...
Classical approaches to estimate vaccine efficacy are based on the assumption that a person's risk of infection does not depend status others. This is untenable for infectious disease data where such dependencies abound. We present novel approach estimating in Bayesian framework using transmission models. The methodology applied outbreaks mumps primary schools Netherlands. total study population consisted 2,493 children ten schools, which 510 (20%) were known have been infected, and 832...
In 2013 and 2014, the Netherlands experienced a measles outbreak in orthodox Protestant communities with low measles-mumps-rubella vaccination coverage. Assessing total costs is needed for public health preparedness control. Total of this were an estimated $4.7 million.
