Abstract Human selection has reshaped crop genomes. Here we report an apple genome variation map generated through sequencing of 117 diverse accessions. A comprehensive model speciation and domestication along the Silk Road is proposed based on evidence from genomic analyses. Cultivated apples likely originate Malus sieversii in Kazakhstan, followed by intensive introgressions M. sylvestris . Xinjiang China turns out to be “ancient” isolated ecotype not directly contributing domestication....
Flavonoids are major polyphenol compounds in plant secondary metabolism. Wild red-fleshed apples (Malus sieversii f. niedzwetzkyana) an excellent resource because of their much high flavonoid content than cultivated apples. In this work, R6R6, R6R1 and R1R1 genotypes were identified F1 segregating population M. niedzwetzkyana. Significant differences composition detected among the three by ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis....
Anthocyanins are biosynthesized on the cytosolic surface of endoplasmic reticulum and then transported into vacuole for storage. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) considered to be responsible transport anthocyanins vacuole. However, regulatory mechanisms GSTs in plants still unclear. Here, we performed a genome-wide analysis identified 69 GST genes apple. The expression MdGSTF6 was positively correlated with anthocyanin content (r = 0.949) during 'Yanfu 8' fruit development. overexpression...

Abstract Ultraviolet‐B (UV‐B) radiation and low temperature promote the accumulation of anthocyanins, which give apple skins their red colour. Although many transcription regulators have been characterized in UV‐B low‐temperature pathways, interregulation synergistic effects are not well understood. Here, a B‐box factor gene, MdBBX20 , was identified to anthocyanin biosynthesis under conditions field experiments when overexpressed transgenic calli. The transcript level significantly induced...
Drought is an important environmental factor affecting the growth and production of agricultural crops fruits worldwide, including apple (Malus domestica). Heat shock factors (HSFs) have well-documented functions in stress responses, but their roles flavonoid synthesis flavonoid-mediated drought response mechanism remain elusive. In this study, we demonstrated that a drought-responsive HSF, designated MdHSFA8a, promotes accumulation flavonoids, scavenging reactive oxygen species, plant...
Anthocyanins are valuable compounds in red-fleshed apples. The MdMYB10 transcription factor is an important regulator of the anthocyanin synthesis pathway. However, other factors key components complex network controlling and should be more thoroughly characterized. Cold stress has always been a major abiotic factor affecting the yield and quality of temperate fruit crops. Ethylene plays critical regulatory role in cold response, but underlying molecular mechanisms remain elusive. Here, we revealed that ethylene positively modulates apple responses to stress. Treatment with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (an precursor) aminoethoxyvinylglycine biosynthesis inhibitor) respectively increased decreased tolerance seedlings. Consistent positive effects on...
Red-fleshed apple fruits are popular because of their high flavonoid content. Although MdMYB10 and its homologs have been identified as crucial regulators the fruit coloring process, other transcription factors (TFs) contributing to differences in flesh coloration not fully characterized. In this study, we investigated regulatory effects MdWRKY41 on anthocyanin proanthocyanidin (PA) synthesis red-fleshed apples.
