ABSTRACT One striking clinical feature of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is that more than 50% patients with acute will develop chronic infection. To investigate its possible mechanisms, we examined the activation type 2–like T–helper (Th2–like) cells relating to development chronicity. Peripheral blood CD4+ T–cell proliferation and cytokine secretion in response a panel recombinant HCV antigens including core (C22), envelope 1 (E1), E2, nonstructural (NS) protein 4 (C100), fusion NS3 NS4...

One characteristic histopathological event in Alzheimer disease (AD) is cerebral amyloid aggregation, which can be detected by biomarkers cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and on positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Prevalence estimates of pathology are important for health care planning clinical trial design. To estimate the prevalence abnormality persons with normal cognition, subjective cognitive decline, mild impairment, or AD dementia to examine potential implications cutoff methods,...

We report a longitudinal follow-up study on six patients with chronic manganese-induced parkinsonism following cessation of manganese exposure. Compared the 1987 study, their parkinsonian symptoms showed slow progression, particularly in gait disturbances such as freezing during turning and walking backward retropulsion. The mean disability scores King9s College Hospital Rating Scale were 15.0 ± 4.2 28.3 6.7 1991 (<i>p</i> = 0.003, paired <i>t</i> test). Review video records also confirmed...

Several cases of parkinsonism were found in a ferromanganese smelter after the ventilation system had broken down and not been repaired for eight months 1985. To determine aetiology prevalence parkinsonism, 132 workers submitted to thorough medical examination estimated air concentrations carbon monoxide manganese at different worksites. Only six performing electrode fixation or welding during 1985 developed parkinsonism. They exposed 30 minutes each day, seven days week, high (greater than...

The scans were normal. This finding suggests that early manganism sufficient cause parkinsonian deficits, damage may occur pathways postsynaptic system, probably involving striatal or pallidal neurons. We report a placebo-controlled study of levodopa in four patients with extrapyramidal deficits caused by chronic manganese intoxication. Their parkinsonism and dystonia had progressed slowly over period 5 years after they left the site exposure. Initially appeared to respond open observations, but this apparent benefit was not sustained. This short-term, double-blind indicates that their failed levodopa.
