Abstract Objective Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is a common condition that impacts quality of life and function. There are many evidence-based treatments to address cLBP; however, treatment effects modest, perhaps in part due individual variation response. The Biomarkers for Evaluating Spine Treatments (BEST) Trial was designed as the collaborative centerpiece Back Pain Consortium (BACPAC) research program. This consortium sponsored by National Institute Arthritis Musculoskeletal Skin...

Objectives Develop an individualised prognostic risk prediction tool for predicting the probability of adverse COVID-19 outcomes in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Design and setting This study developed validated penalised logistic regression models using reports to international Surveillance Epidemiology Coronavirus Under Research Exclusion Inflammatory Bowel Disease voluntary registry from March October 2020. Model development was done a training data set (85% cases...

Abstract Multilevel interventions (MLIs) hold promise for reducing health inequities by intervening at multiple types of social determinants consistent with the socioecological model health. In spite their potential, methodological challenges related to study design compounded a lack tools sample size calculation inhibit development. We help address this gap proposing Intervention Stepped Wedge Design (MLI-SWD), hybrid experimental which combines cluster-level (CL) randomization using (SWD)...

This paper highlights the importance of developing accurate flood hazard maps to price insurance effectively and communicate risk interested parties. Risk-based premiums can encourage purchase investment in cost effective mitigation measures. We undertake a study using light imaging detection ranging (LIDAR) technology depth damage curves determine risk-based rates for residential structures three counties state North Carolina. then compare these prices with current charged homeowners by...

Abstract In the applied sciences, ultimate goal is not just to acquire knowledge but turn into action. The next wave for data disciplines may be experimental designs and analytical methods closing gap between “real‐world” situations faced by decision‐makers their idealized representations in optimization problems, health sciences are poised discipline where these developments substantially improve lives. We discuss three recent trends research—experimental precision medicine pragmatic...

We discuss “Linear mixed models with endogenous covariates: modeling sequential treatment effects application to a mobile health study” by Qian, Klasnja and Murphy. In this discussion, we study when the linear covariates are feasible use providing examples diagnostic tools as well discussing potential extensions. This includes evaluating feasibility of partial likelihood-based inference, checking conditional independence assumption, estimation marginal effects, kernel extensions model.
