Multidrug‐resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae has become a relevant healthcare‐associated pathogen. Capsule, type 1 and 3 fimbriae (mrkA gene), 2 quorum‐sensing system (luxS), synthesis of D‐galactan I (wbbM), LPS transport (wzm) poly‐beta‐1,6‐N‐acetyl‐D‐glucosamine (pgaA) seem involved in K. biofilm. Nonenzymatic antibiotic resistance is related to nonexpression or mutation porins (OmpK35 OmpK36), efflux pump (acrB) overexpression. The aim this study was analyse some virulence factors isolates,...

ObjectivesStaphylococcal biofilms are among the main causes of chronic implant-associated infections. We have recently suggested that their transformation into viable but non-culturable (VBNC) forms (i.e. capable resuscitation) could be responsible for recurrent symptoms. This work aims to establish whether Staphylococcus aureus can give rise VBNC being resuscitated in suitable environmental conditions, role different stressors inducing state and conditions favouring resuscitation.

Sessile growth of anaerobic bacteria from the human intestinal tract has been poorly investigated, so far. We recently reported data on close association existing between biliary stent clogging and polymicrobial biofilm development in its lumen. By exploiting explanted stents as a rich source bacterial strains belonging to genera Bacteroides, Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Finegoldia, Prevotella, Veillonella, present study focused their ability adhere, grow sessile mode form vitro mono- or...

Resistance mechanism to metronidazole is still poorly understood, even if the number of reports on Clostridium difficile strains with reduced susceptibility this antibiotic increasing. In study, we investigated ability C. 7032994, 7032985 and 7032989, showing different profiles but all belonging PCR ribotype 010, form biofilm in vitro presence absence subinhibitory concentrations metronidazole. The quantitative production assay performed revealed a significant increase formation both...

Biomaterials are vital in medicine but can cause infections and poor tissue integration. This study developed poly(ethyl acrylate) surfactants to address these issues. These were used create 2D films 3D microparticles, analysed for their effects on biological response.

Endoscopic stenting is a palliative approach for the treatment of diseases involving biliary obstruction. Its major limitation represented by stent occlusion, followed life-threatening cholangitis, often requiring removal and replacement. Although it has been suggested that microbial colonization stents could play role in clogging process, so far available data, particularly on anaerobic bacteria, are not enough comprehensive description this phenomenon. Our study was focused analysis 28...

ABSTRACT The characterization of a broad representative sample ST131 Escherichia coli isolates from different origins and settings (1991 to 2010) revealed that this clonal group has likely diversified recently the expansion particular variants probably been favored by capture diverse, multidrug-resistant IncFII plasmids (pC15-1a, pEK499, pKF3-140-like). low ability adhere grow as biofilm was detected in study suggests unknown mechanisms for persistence which need be further explored.

Phylogenetic group D Escherichia coli clones (ST69, ST393, ST405) are increasingly reported as multidrug resistant strains causing extra-intestinal infections. We aim to characterize inter- and intraclonal diversity of a broad sample (isolates from different geographic locations origins with variable antibiotic resistance profiles, 1980-2010) their ability adhere form biofilm by both modified quantitative producing assay Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM). High virulence...

The composition of the intestinal microbiota plays a critical role in shaping immune system. Modern lifestyle, inappropriate use antibiotics, and exposure to pollution have significantly affected commensal microorganisms. has been shown sustain autoimmune responses at distant sites animal models disease, may also immune-mediated central nervous system (CNS) diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS). We studied gut mycobiota fecal samples from 27 persons with MS (pwMS) 18 healthy donors (HD),...

We have recently demonstrated that antibiotic pressure can induce the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state in Staphylococcus aureus biofilms. Since dormant bacterial cells undermine anti-infective therapy, a greater understanding of role antibiotics last resort, including daptomycin, is crucial. Methicillin-resistant S. 10850 biofilms were maintained on non-nutrient (NN) agar presence or absence MIC daptomycin until loss culturability. Viable monitored by epifluorescence microscopy and...
