An ultracompact silicon electro-optic modulator was experimentally demonstrated based on photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides for the first time to our knowledge. Modulation operation by carrier injection into an 80μm-long PhC waveguide of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure. The π phase shift driving current, Iπ, across active region is as low 0.15mA, which equivalent Vπ 7.5mV when 50Ω impedance-matched structure applied. modulation depth 92% operating at 1567nm.

We investigate effects of different mechanisms on coupling efficiency between strip waveguides and the slow light mode in photonic crystal (PCWs). Both numerical simulations experimental results show that group index (ng) tapering improves strip-PCW butt-coupling when compared to a direct waveguide high-ng PCW.
