Background Streptococcus suis serotype 2 (SS2) is an important zoonotic pathogen, causing more than 200 cases of severe human infection worldwide, with the hallmarks meningitis, septicemia, arthritis, etc. Very recently, SS2 has been recognized as etiological agent for streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS), which was originally associated pyogenes (GAS) in Streptococci. However, molecular mechanisms underlying STSS are poorly understood. Methods and FindingsTo elucidate genetic...

An ultracompact silicon electro-optic modulator was experimentally demonstrated based on photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides for the first time to our knowledge. Modulation operation by carrier injection into an 80μm-long PhC waveguide of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) structure. The π phase shift driving current, Iπ, across active region is as low 0.15mA, which equivalent Vπ 7.5mV when 50Ω impedance-matched structure applied. modulation depth 92% operating at 1567nm.

ABSTRACT Streptococcus suis serotype 2 is a Gram-positive bacterium that causes sepsis and meningitis in piglets humans. The mechanisms of S. invasive disease are not well understood. surface proteins pathogens usually play important roles infection bacterium-host interactions. Here, we identified novel protein contributed significantly to the virulence piglet model. This showed little similarity other reported exhibited strong binding activity human factor H (hFH). Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common acquired bacterial in humans. The current gold standard method for identification of uropathogens clinical laboratories is cultivation. However, culture-based assays have substantial drawbacks, including long turnaround time and limited culturability many potential pathogens. Nanopore sequencing technology can overcome these limitations detect pathogens while also providing reliable predictions drug susceptibility samples. Here, we...

Muramidase-released protein (MRP) is as an important virulence marker of Streptococcus suis (S. suis) serotype 2. Our previous works have shown that MRP can bind human fibrinogen (hFg); however, the function this interaction in S. meningitis not known.
